hansen {l Wrote}:2 hour practice. Helmets only.

Saturday’s notebook: One noticeable sight during the first practice of the spring was the change in physical appearance several players made during the off-season under head strength and conditioning coach Phil Matusz and his staff … Saturday was the first opportunity to see 12 true freshmen who enrolled in January. Quarterback Emmett Morehead has prototypical size (6’5”, 225 pounds) and showed off a strong, accurate arm. The depth in the quarterback room with returning starter Phil Jurkovec along with Dennis Grosel, Matt Valecce, Matthew Rueve, Daelen Menard and Morehead has improved vastly in two years under offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Frank Cignetti. Rueve was one of the players who looked to make major gains in the weight room in the off-season … True freshman running back Xavier Coleman flashed a tremendous burst in the hole and showed off his speed and versatility in the passing game on a 45-yard reception during team periods … First-Team All-ACC wide receiver Zay Flowers picked up right where he left off last season with two long completions from Jurkovec during team work. The connection between the two has been there from the first day of spring practice last season as Jurkovec lofted two deep completions to Flowers behind the secondary for 50+ yards … the cornerbacks looked to gain the upper hand against the wide receivers in one-on-one drills early in practice. All-ACC defensive back Josh DeBerry showed off his tremendous ball skills and also picked off a pass … true freshman corner Shawn Asbury II had an interception during team work Saturday … Jaelen Gill, now wearing No. 1, had a long reception over the middle from Jurkovec … Grosel hooked up with Ezechiel Tiede for a touchdown during 11-on-11 action … BC resumes spring practice on Tuesday morning inside Fish Field House.

Here's hoping for an open and fair QB competition.

Offensively, this is a very talented group. Probably the weakest position is RB... which isn’t weak.

No idea what to expect on D. You’d think the coaching talent on that side (including Hafley) should be able to get that group into a not-awful shape. If the D is competent, it’s 10-2 time.

TE is also a big question mark and we played 2-TE sets on more than 50% of downs. Witter is the only returning TE that played a down last season (Luchetti may have played a little at the end of the 2019 season) and he did not look like he will be much of a threat as a receiver. Luchetti missed all of last season with an injury and Lillis was out for most of the season. There was talk that one of the FRs impressed in August, think it was Gordinier. Anyway, with only 4 scholarship TEs on the roster, we are very thin at the position.

Agreed. I figured that as they were moving on from the David-Bailey-big-back, they would also be moving away from the multi-TE sets.

Assuming Kobay & Williams (anyone know what his injury was?) are 100% in August, this is the best group of WRs has ever had.

I am told that the staff was surprised how big he was when he got on campus and that he is bigger than most of the LBs.

It’s been clear in the early going two strengths of the 2021 Boston College football team is the depth of the wide receiver room and in the secondary. Despite not having Kobay White and Ethon Williams back in the rotation, the Eagles look to present defenses with a ton of challenges this year on the outside, including the return of All-ACC wide receiver Zay Flowers. In addition, Jaelen Gill, CJ Lewis, Taji Johnson and Jehlani Galloway all return along with the influx of skilled true freshmen Lewis Bond and Dante Reynolds. In the secondary, several key returners are back in the fold, including All-ACC defensive back Josh DeBerry.

Gill has looked more comfortable in the offense entering his second year this spring, and made another highlight reel grab on the sideline elevating over a defender for a catch in traffic … the same comfort level in the scheme could be said about quarterback Phil Jurkovec, who spread the ball around to a variety of receivers, including a chunk play to Zay Flowers. Jurkovec fit three balls into tight windows that went for long completions to CJ Lewis as well … Lewis Bond has not looked like a mid-year true freshman through three practices, including another deep target for a completion Thursday … Taji Johnson showed off his hands with a tough reception in traffic for a gain of 20 yards Thursday … Jason Maitre made a terrific play on the ball for an interception and Jalen Williams grabbed a tipped ball for an INT as well … the Eagles host their annual Pro Day for NFL personnel on Friday before returning to spring practice on Saturday inside Fish Field House.

This is from last practice before Easter....

Sophomore linebacker Kam Arnold continues to look comfortable in his move to linebacker from safety in the offseason. The West Bloomfield, Mich., native is squarely in the mix for one of the starting spots at linebacker … Phil Jurkovec had another good practice, zipping the ball all over the field on Wednesday. He hit Taji Johnson on a deep pass of 30 yards and connected with Spencer Witter and Jaelen Gill for first down receptions … true freshman running back Xavier Coleman continued his solid spring with an 80-yard touchdown run. The New Jersey native used his quickness to break through the line of scrimmage and put on the jets to go the distance for the score … redshirt freshman Tommy Birmingham had a couple first down receptions from his tight end position during team work Wednesday … freshman CJ Burton had an excellent pass breakup downfield, staying stride for stride with Zay Flowers … redshirt freshman Denzel Blackwell also contributed a key pass breakup during third down situational drills.

April 9th practice notes

The Boston College football team hit the practice field in shoulder pads and helmets for the first time since having Easter break. The Eagles were on the field for just over 90 minutes Friday morning inside Fish Field House.

Practice Notes: The non-contact practice allowed for extended work on fundamentals along with 1-on-1 and 7-on-7 work between the offense and defense … redshirt junior Vinny DePalma is back after missing last season due to injury and had near interception when breaking on a pass during 7-on-7 work … DePalma played in all 13 games and made one start with 33 tackles, including five TFLs, plus one forced fumble in 2019 for the Eagles … freshman cornerback CJ Burton made a terrific play on the ball for an interception during 1-on-1s with the wide receivers … redshirt junior quarterback Phil Jurkovec continues to look comfortable in the offense entering his second season at BC. The Pittsburgh native sprayed the ball all over the field to several different receivers on Friday. Jaelen Gill was on the receiving end of several big plays, including going full-extension over the middle for a chunk play. Gill has been electric all spring and continues to be another big-play threat in the offense. He also had a 30-yard TD reception from Jurkovec on Friday … redshirt junior Ezechiel Tiede had a 40-yard reception from Jurkovec and he caught a perfectly thrown ball from Dennis Grosel for a touchdown … Grosel also found redshirt junior Jehlani Galloway for a big play Friday and threw a touchdown pass to freshman Lewis Bond … redshirt freshman Denzel Blackwell had a terrific pass breakup during 7-on-7 drills.

April 15 practice notes

It was easy to see the experience of Temple transfer Isaiah Graham-Mobley at linebacker when the pads come on. He moved sideline to sideline, making a couple plays in the hole for defensive stops … Kam Arnold paired with Graham-Mobley at linebacker and the former safety continues to look smooth in his move to linebacker. Linebackers coach Sean Duggan on Arnold “I give Kam a lot of credit. When we brought up the idea of moving positions, he was all for it.” … Duggan also discussed the impact of Graham-Mobley on defense for the Eagles “I think anytime you get a guy that's played a lot of football, I think that's definitely something that helps. ... Kind of understanding when things go wrong sometimes to be that calming presence on the defense." … Junior quarterback Phil Jurkovec continued to find different receivers throughout the practice, connecting with Jaelen Gill, Zay Flowers, Jehlani Galloway and Ezechiel Tiede for chunk plays … Ethon Williams was back at wide receiver and made a terrific, toe-touch reception in the end zone during red zone drills … Xavier Coleman and Travis Levy continued to look comfortable in the run game. Coleman has shown throughout the spring an extra gear as he hits the seam between the tackles … Shitta Sillah had a would-be sack if the quarterbacks were live during team period … true freshman CJ Burton and Bryce Steele got some early action with the regulars during Thursday’s practice … Bryce Sebastian made a nice play for an interception in the red zone from his cornerback position.

I would think this is his prime consideration in terms of where to go. He has very little film for coaches to watch, and he was a solid but not particularly high-profile recruit coming in. So it's really unlikely that he'll be able to find a transfer spot at a FBS or strong FCS school and then compete for substantial playing time.

He majored in Business Administration, right? So I would imagine he'd hope to transfer someplace where he can pursue an MBA.

I imagine that means looking towards Ivies as well as other FCS schools (e.g. Georgetown, UC-Davis). With that much eligibility, Valecce might consider transferring to a D-III program if it means he can get into a really strong MBA program (e.g. Univ. of Chicago, MIT, Carnegie Mellon). That might end up being his best option. Presumably he'd get some preference in admission, and he might get some financial aid that wouldn't happen for him otherwise. At that level he'd almost surely start in 2022 if not immediately, and he wouldn't have to put in as much time on football while he's pursuing the MBA.
