So what is the impact on BC if the Ivies announce this week they are postponing fall sports?

Rutgers announces most courses will be online this fall, and the number of students allowed to reside on campus will be very limited: https://6abc.com/education/rutgers-university-majority-of-courses-will-be-remote-this-fall/6302109/

I really hate writing this, but I'm not sure how a school can justify playing sports when it doesn''t even consider it safe enough to have kids on campus for most classes, or even in their dorm rooms. This does not bode well.

Rutgers cancelling school already is crazy when the NJ’s governor is entering the final stages of reopening. I’ve talked to a few friends who are doctors in hospitals in different parts of the State. Each saw very real, very dire situations in April. But, now each hospital had less than 10 patients. Infection rates increase as people interact in a non-quarantine world. That’s not a surprise and should not be cause for hysteria. So long as hospitalizations remain manageable, businesses should be open. But, returning to normal is the last outcome Dems want. So, you will see the Ivies and a host of similar left-leaning institutions demanding sports be sacrificed at the Altar of Corona. If nothing else, these academics might see it as an opportunity to right-size athletics with the institutions stated purpose of higher learning.

Ivies not playing sports this Fall. Seems like they are also angling to (a) go virtual, (b) charge full freight and (c) continue to give visas for foreign students to learn remotely.

The ivies can afford to cancel football and regular school. Most p5 need ESPN cash to keep their athletic department afloat.

Stanford just announced they are cutting 7 varsity sports.

The headwinds against schools like BC are increasing. P5 looking for legislation for payments to athletes ala CA, a trend BC opposes and can ill afford, especially when support for athletics is at a low ebb.

Frankly, I expect the NCAA landscape and that at BC in 5 years to be dramatically different. I just think the idea that BC will or can try to keep pace with the trends of the P5 is unrealistic. They have neither the will nor the resources, and that situation has been greatly accelerated by the challenges posed by covid19.

There are a number of factors that are putting significant pressure on the current model. There is the drive to have all scholarship athletes be recategorized as employees. That move will gut all non-profitable sports (leaving only FB, BB and one or two other self-sustaining male sports for those in the Power 5). Also, there will be a reckoning in the coming years as it relates to TV revenue. As everyone knows, the TV model is broken. While there will be new bidders like Netflix, Apple, Hulu, Facebook, DAZN and whatever other nascent streaming service may arrive, it isn't likely that the added competition will make up for the cable revenues that currently proliferate. This isn't unique to College, sports finances have been evolving over time (the Mets have an operating loss of at least $90mm per season).

The loss of sports revenue will hit a number of Power 5 programs exceedingly hard. People like to talk about the college arms race (with escalating facilities and salaries). I happen to believe that COVID may be a come-to-Jesus moment on that front. The cancellation of sports has prevented the offsetting revenues to fund these massive liabilities. The accounting is going to get dire and a number of programs will be looking for State bailouts at a time local governments have exhausted their treasuries (due to corona expenses) and face significantly less tax revenue coming in (due to the quarantine). For all the notable frustrations that we have forever dealt with under the Leahy regime, his demand for fiscal responsibility in athletics may turn out to be the thing that saves the Department.

Ultimately, I predict the dire financials at the BabyRapists will start a new push to the long-awaited divorce from the NCAA. The Power 5 can go and field semi-pro teams in FB and BB. The NCAA can go back to concentrating on its original mission... amateur athletics. I foresee the NCAA composed of all non-Power 5 schools (Ivies, BigEast, AAC, MAC, MWC, CUSA, Academies, etc.). There may be a few opt to stay back (BC, WF, Duke, NW, Stan and Vandy the most obvious with decisions to make).

There is zero chance, given what Duke basketball has become, that Duke won’t join the Baby Rapists. My guess is that men’s football and basketball will cleave off from the NCAA entirely at a P5 level. The rest of sports will still be housed in the NCAA and greatly scaled back—with Title 9 no longer a factor with football and men’s basketball (the employee model takes it off the table), women’s sports are going away except to the extent necessary to maintain scholarship parity with the few men’s sports that are self funding (which is largely regional depending on the sport (BC/BU, Big Ten, UND, Denver, ASU, some Ivies for hockey; SEC, the old “Six PAC”, some ACC and a few rando southern baseball schools; Cuse, Hopkins, ND, a few ACC, a few Big 10, a few MAAC/CAA programs for lacrosse), a few Big 10, Big 12, Cornell and some rando small Pennsylvania and Ohio schools for wrestling).

I still think in 15 years football as we know it is fundamentally dead and top basketball players go pro out of high school into development leagues or abroad. The athletic scholarship and the varsity sports team may easily die in our lifetimes. There will be a lot of empty stadiums on college campuses.

College sports as semi-pro feeder schools does not interest me whatsoever. It may very well happen but I don’t think it would be for the best.

Dick Rosenthal {l Wrote}:There is zero chance, given what Duke basketball has become, that Duke won’t join the Baby Rapists.

I'm not saying anyone would not join the Power 5, but I think there will at least be discussion at some of these schools. BB won't be driving any decisions. But, if it did (at a place like Duke), then it is likely they'd stay behind in the NCAA. NBA is going back to drafting HS players and are going all-in on creating a minor league system. From a BB perspective, the Power 5 will be fishing in a talent-depleted pool. Basically, I'm saying the product will suck and no one will care about seeing Oklahoma vs Georgia in BB (where those left behind may be able to cull more intriguing match-ups that are borne from historic rivalries and greater number of teams).

All this is just different ways of saying that the NCAA model probably peaked about 10 years ago. It has been nervously evolving in preparation for a violent change (which the pandemic likely accelerated).

ACC delaying all Fall sports to the start of September 1st. First Power 5 to enact such a delay. No football games effected.

Hafley did a Zoom call today, the focus was recruiting, here are the highlights:

- Hates the star system. Evaluates based on what the coaches see and makes sure the kdi's a good fit. "I don't want just a guy who's good on tape, I want a guy who fits."
- "A good recruiter can recruit anywhere, but has a home base." Emphasized each coach has a region they're responsible for, but recruit nationally. Emphasized the importance of relationships in these areas.
- Added two full time recruiting staff members. Total of three now.
- All other things being equal between two recruits, they'd take the kid from New England, but believes that BC has a national brand and will recruit Texas, Florida, etc.
- Recruiting kids that fit BC, not specific states or regions.

Was this answer in response to criticism of the local recruiting results?

It was a question on where the recruiting focus is and if they're recruiting from New England. It sounds like since they're taking a more national approach than prior staffs and so are finding more talent. It doesn't sound like he's trying to build a fence around New England.

every day there are stories of voluntary workouts shutting down due to corona so we'll see other conferences do the same as the acc. then we wait for the other shoe to drop - push the season to spring or worse, do what the ivy league did and cancel all fall sports.

These things don't happen without TV partners signing off. If Big Ten is going conference only, expect the ACC to do the same.

I am cynical about this, but think the economic model for so many schools is so fragile, that they will play.
