Here is my take...
1. As I have been saying all along, Daz is a good evaluator and recruiter. The latest poaching of players identified over the summer just further supports that for folks who were stubbornly in disbelief. I think he is questionable as a developer of talent and a flat out awful coach. But, he is a very good salesman.
2. Ham is a loss, but only because we are thin at LB with this class (with the combined loss of Eichenberg). From a quality perspective, I think we would've easily filled the spot with comparable talent if the decommit occurred August. In spite of him apprently pulling a Dillon Quinn at a 247 Camp, he only got a second Big 5 offer when Colorado's new staff is scrambling to fill its class and are flinging around offers.
3. Smith and Eichenberg are the losses. That said, BC is always going to have trouble holding onto an Ohio kid with an OSU offer and a Florida kid with an FSU offer (even if we were 10-2). But, there was talent there that is impossible to replace at this stage.
4. We still have some irons in the fire with Greico, Deberry, Carter and Pyne. Hopefully, some of these slide our way. I believe Carter will end up at LT when all said and done. So, not a perfect contingency to losing Smith (who was an interior lineman), but it would be something. If Greico can grow into a LB, he very well may be a better long term prospect than Ham.
5. I don't think we kept Daz to "save the class". But, if that was part of the thinking, I hope that losing 2 of our top 5 recruits will make folks aware of the folly.
