They'll only get a game or two, and they won't overtake the Cavs until Isaiah walks and Fultz assumes lead dog responsibility, but they aren't far off. Draft Fultz, extend Bradley, sign Griffin or Hayward, the only two real options for FAs

I don't think they were trading that pick under any circumstances.

I'd prefer Hayward to the no-knees Blake

In addition to his injuries this year, past injuries include:
"Blake Griffin’s history of injuries to his left leg is troublingly long: broken kneecap, meniscus tear, partially torn quadriceps, knee bone bruise, sprained knee, and strained hamstring. Along with numerous other injuries (back stress fracture, right elbow staph infection, and broken right hand), Griffin’s health has caused him to miss nearly two full NBA seasons’ worth of games, the 2012 Olympics, the 2014 FIBA World Cup, and the 2016 Olympics."

I agree, the difference is they need Griffin's skill set more than Hayward's. In two years, Jalen Brown is probably going to be as good or better.

Noted on the skill set. Problem is, by the time Griffin would bring them to the next level, 2-3 years, he will be on the decline or potentially worse due to injury history. I also think brown will be damn good but I still would rather sign Hayward because Danny boy can eventually trade when Brown gets good. If they don't get Hayward, I would prefer not signing Griffin as it would be way too big of a risk and an impulsive move.

It's going to be Hayward, they are going to draft Fultz, and they are going to extend Bradley. Team will be stupid deep but still won't have the first team horses to get to the Finals. Lose Amir Johnson and Jerebko and add Fultz and Hayward? Yes please.

Maybe the stashed French dude in China can come over and grab 12 rebounds a game and beat people up.

And as you know, they still have the nets pick next year.

It's all well and good, but for now, they are on path to have 11 guards and small forwards and Al Horford.

Take the good Lopez in 2018 while drafting the Nets' #1 pick and complete the destruction of that franchise.

Probably get Nene or Zach Randolph for some pocket change.

I'd be good with a run at Monroe. Ibaka is going to cost too much for what he does.

Jesus Christ you don't like any basketball player over 6 foot 4. Offer an alternative to him that's available DeAndre 35% free throw?

Brook Lopez is basically Al Horford but worse. But he's tall so rebounds.

Al Horford is awesome. People that don't like his game are retarded.

Fair. But still better than crowder and brown out of position. And he fits stevens system for a big.

Ante Zizic is coming from Europe next year to take Amir Johnson's roster spot and supposedly he is a great rebounder. Plus he'll be on a rookie contract.

I'd wager that the French guy that was recalled from overseas to the D-League makes the roster before Zizic. I'd also bet neither starts next year, so you still need a 4 in the short term.

Thomas
Bradley
Crowder
???
Horford

Fultz
Smart
Brown
Olynyk
Zeller

Rozier
??

If they are able to sign a max FA like Hayward, and one of last years' bigs is actually making this 12-man roster, they either need to move a group of guys for one contract or they are going to have to eat Zeller's deal for a year.

Otherwise, nice problems to have, plenty of good players and plenty of money. And a high pick next year.

You really can't predict because this summer something big is getting blown up. Next summer Isaiah, Bradley, and Smart all have their contracts up and its impossible to sign all three. They're going to have to trade at least one of the three so they at least get something in return, and to clear space to go after a max player (dream scenario of course: Gordon Heyward). The real question is, does Ainge have the guts to let Isaiah go. Because it's gonna cost $200 million to resign him and that limits your possibilities elsewhere.

I've read that Zizic would be lottery pick if he was in this year's draft. Yabusele could take Jerebko's roster spot next year, since I doubt they're going to resign Jerebko anyway. I'm less sold on Yabusele going forward but who knows. In a perfect world you could trade Zeller for a mediocre pick to some stupid team to dump the salary. But if we can't resign Olynyk, Zeller might be valuable to have.

Smart is not up next year. Just Bradley and Thomas (EDIT: and Olynyk). They'll extend Bradley and let Thomas walk. They aren't going to trade him, but they aren't going to pay him either.

Oh, and I was under the impression you can't dump players for picks in the NBA without matching an exemption or some such shit that requires ESPN to build a "trade machine" to see if the numbers work. Have to trade players for players under the NBA CBA with some exceptions.

Last but not least, the Celtics aren't going to need to clear cap space to sign a max player.

I don't think you know how the qualifying offer thing works but Olynyk is a restricted free agent this year and Smart next year. And if you know you're going to let someone walk ahead of time, it makes no sense not to trade them

Look at Blake Griffin's games played the last few years. No thanks.

I'd still prefer Ibaka because I think he'll be a little cheaper and is a rim protector along with rebounding.

If you want them to help your team that season it does. They are going to be really good next year with Thomas but they aren't giving him max salary when its over. They also aren't trading the key guy from a team that made the Eastern Conference finals and got better. Bad teams trade guys that are going to walk at the end of the year, not good ones.

And no, I certainly have never taken the time to have an understanding of the salary cap/free agent/trade rules in the NBA. I barely take the time to watch the games. I do enjoy the Celtics though.

The more I think about this, I think the winning solution is try to have a really really good team about 4 years from now which is gonna involve resigning Isaiah and Smart, trading Avery Bradley this summer for a lottery pick, build around Isaiah, Smart, Brown, Fultz, Brooklyn 2018 pick, and whatever pick you get for Avery...then sign the best free agent on the market the summer when Horford's deal is up and that's where you go all in on the championship.

I'm having trouble seeing how you can put a team together over the next 2 or 3 years that beats the Warriors, there's a lot of good players/assets but there's just a mismatch between players/assets on the Celtics who are good now and players/assets that will not be good for several years. And accept a lot of losses in the eastern conference finals in the meantime

You can't really do sign and trades anymore. It's still technically possible but the CBA has some rules that make it significantly more difficult.

I'm having a hard time picturing a team winning the championship with IT. I'm okay with the rest of your premise, I'd just keep Bradley and let Isaiah go. If you feel it necessary to trade him for value now and lose your shot at the East before he leaves, fine. But I do not want the Celtics to give max value for 4+ years to a 5'7'' PG who will be 33+ at the end of the deal and will never play any defense.

The rest of it good, Fultz, Smart, Bradley, Brown, Brooklyn pick, which is likely a big anyway when you see the list of best guys, starting with the kid Smart just signed. Target 3 years from now. I'd rather do that than sign Hayward frankly. Brown will be a better player than Hayward by the end of Hayward's contract.
