If the season started on Saturday, Addazio said Howell would be the Eagles' primary placekicker and punter. Howell didn't miss any extra points and made his lone field goal attempt Saturday. He also showed off his leg during a series of 11-on-11 kicking drills midway through the scrimmage, making kicks from 29 yards, 35 yards, and 52 yards while missing a 41-yarder. Howell botched his first punt - a 24-yarder on a low snap - and sophomore kicker Mike Knoll had a 31-yard punt in his lone attempt and also made and missed a 47-yard field goal during the drills. Freshman kicker Colton Lichtenberg made 36- and 47-yard field goals.

It's fortunate for BC they get two additional scrimmages against Maine and Howard.
For those of you predicting 9 wins or whatever other silliness, we're going to need to score more than 10 points per game or whatever.

Try to remember that the offense is going up against quite possibly the ACC's best defense in these scrimmages. Only VT and Clemson will have comparable defenses. And it's unlikely that any ACC team will have the run-stopping DLine BC does. We finished 2nd against the run in the nation last year and it looks like we'll be substantially deeper and better this year.
In the video interview with Daz after the scrimmage, he said that he's purposefully choosing not to go vanilla with the defense in preseason scrimmages, which he says many coaches do. Instead, he's throwing all of experienced and polished defenses looks at an inexperienced OLine. He's forging the OLine in fire. They'll get vanilla scrimmages on September 5th and September 12th and you'll see that they will be much better than in the scrimmages.

I really like the defense, but best D in the ACC is crazy talk.

Last year we were 3rd in the ACC in scoring defense and 3rd in the ACC in total defense. And we're returning a lot and drastically improving the depth.
Calling calling the 2015 BC Defense possibly the best in the ACC "crazy talk" is crazy talk.

I'm going to remember this Best D stuff when Brown gives up yet another game winning drive and folks blame the loss on the offense for not having a bigger lead.
eepstein0 {l Wrote}:The D is going to be very good, potentially elite if we have some DBs. Johnson and Simmons are going to be terrific at safety, but our CBs are green and Brown leaves them on an island all the time.
The D is being made to look like world beaters by a pretty inept offense at the moment.

another issue is going to be whether our offense can keep them off the field. if its 3-and-out after 3-and-out every game, even the best Defenses will get tired. Wade (or whoever is the best QB, if its Smith as it sounds like it could be, i hope Addazio doesn't hesitate to make the change) and the O will need to move the sticks every now and then.

HJS {l Wrote}:The starting D at the scrimmage was: Landry, Kavalec, Wujciak and Gutapfel; Daniels, Schwab and Connor Strachan; Moore, Yiadom, Johnson and Simmons
That is a damn solid group... and when you consider some of the others who didn't start (e.g. Mehdi, Strizak, McClary)... Don Brown has a stocked group to work with. The achilles heel on this team is OL... they pretty much blow. BTW... sounds like Smith passed Flutie on the depth chart.
L35guy {l Wrote}:By default, the secondary has to be more athletic than what we've had in the past few years since it can't be much worse. We've probably had the slowest DBs in the league the last few years. How did the OL become such a mess? I mean, some of these guys had good offer lists out of HS, have good size, and Daz is supposed to be an OL wizard.

Having Harris Williams on the line will stabilize things a bit. He's the best one by a long shot.
The rest is a mix of Spaz recruits and freshman. Realistically, Daz still has a month to figure out the right combination of players since our first game isn't until FSU. Hopefully they can get the penalties sorted out, that stuff drives me nuts (illegal formations, etc.).

If you are using the term "Spaz recruit" to mean "unwanted recruit", that simply doesn't apply to most of the OL. Many of those guys had great offers, were highly regarded out of HS and have enough size. I'm with L35 - the performance of the OL is on Daz and Frye. This is not the secondary situation from last year.

"We had nine turnovers. We don't do that at Boston College. Nine turnovers. For me, it just starts and ends right there. We don't turn the ball over.
Do you think the turnovers and drops were a lack of concentration?
"It is now an emphasis. There will be an extremely bright light on that situation as an emphasis. I'm not going to tolerate any more dropped balls. I'm not going to tolerate any more fumbles and I never did, but we are going to be extremely hyper focused now."
As you get into the final week of preparation before game week, will there be another scrimmage like this?
"Yes there will. I told them we were going again on Wednesday. We are not game ready. That's the way it's going to go. We can't do what we did today."
Yes we will. I keep going. We have to win the war. We need to get this fixed. This is not who we are. We don't do that. It's not okay. The sun doesn't shine, food doesn't very good.
"The backs were okay. Tyler (Rouse) had a really nice run for a touchdown. I thought a couple of the younger guys ran hard at times. We're still young back there. We're missing some cuts and things but it was certainly adequate. It was above the line. It wasn't great. It wasn't bad. It was okay. We missed a couple of perimeter blocks and a couple screens
