Despite trying to channel Jaime Silva via his locks, Sylvia is one player who, through no fault of his own, is a D2 player woefully overmatched at this level. The TD last week was a classic example. Davenport is two inches taller by the book, but i don't think he has seen the field much, if at all. That is one position where for the life of me, I can't understand why we don't try any other warm body.

Sylvia is not a D2 player. The "best coach in 15 years" is playing him out of position. He is much better suited at safety, especially when in 1 on 1 coverage with legitimate players (as VT has because they care and recruit) at WR. Davenport is not the answer because he is 2 inches taller. The only difference is if Davenport was in coverage on that particular play, the WR would ave been 10 yards wide open instead of having to make a catch with Sylvia in his face.
Even with ALJ back, the recruiting in the CB position has been bad and there is no depth. Even with a 10 yard cushion, safeties just arent athletic enough to cover good WRs stride for stride.

That's one thing that will be a big problem going forward. I imagine we'll hire a coach who is willing to play more than 2 CBs at times, and we simply don't have enough talent there. ALJ should be legit but that's more of a guess than proven. I think Manny Asprilla is solid but it's hard to tell with the cushion. CJ Jones looked good before he got hurt but he hasn't played much at all this year. Besides those three (none of whom is particuarly proven), we have a bunch of inexperienced and lightly regarded guys at corner. Safety is a little better as Sylvia and Simmons should hopefully be serviceable and Matt Milano (if he sticks) at least had other BCS offers. Plus, you generally don't go quite as deep at S as at CB.

This is where a normal coach would convert some WRs who can't catch or stick LBs in the face of slot guys to knock the piss out of them off the snap. It's not an optimal solution for every situation, but it's better than the lazy "well, we practiced it this way since 19diggity-five" method.

If I have to see Nick Clancy and Steele DiVitto covering FSU slot receivers in a 5-wide set on 3rd and 8 one more time, I am going to become homicidal.

Several things:
1) Is coach fuckface really going to give shinskie reps?
2) Dudeck over Finch is comical
3) If anyone wants to listen to Spaz's Sunday presser it's 888-266-2081 passcode: 751131 (it's only about 10 minutes). Unbelievable that Spaz's butt buddy Blauds, the Globe and the Herald didn't ask about the final drive in regulation. Kudos to the heights sports editor for asking the question.

I've seen him pretty consistently on special teams. I wouldn't read into it. He could very well be the best LB on this team and we would never know thanks to

Davenport was a walk-on who was given a schollie at the beginning of this year.

Claver - I had seen that the deck chairs was your "thing" so I posted the link elsewhere figuring you would repost as its own thread.
I like that Spaz may be giving Uncle Dave a few send off reps. Why not? Just hope he can find the center for the snap.

Because then they couldn't offer him a fifth year. As long as he doesn't play Saturday, UD will have a year of eligibility remaining.

What happened to Suntrup? Shouldn't he be getting the reps behind Retig? Get him some experience.

Why would they want to give Shinskie another year?
claver2010 {l Wrote}:As for the Suntrup bust talk, don't know where that notion comes from. Based off what 3 passes in a spring game?
