After watching him play in Pittsburgh again after getting to check him out multiple times last spring and summer, two things are very clear about Dingba. First, he will always play harder than everybody else on the court. Sometimes players have a good weekend or are inspired to play hard for a tournament or two, but their effort level isn't consistently that high. With Dingba, that's not the case. He has proven that it's just part of his game. Second, he has made serious strides in his development in the last year. He has always been a great athlete with an impressive build, but he's turning into a more savvy player now. He sees the game happening, he is developing feel, he can pass, he's improved his shot and he's better defending away from the basket.
Dingba does a few things really well. He's a tireless rebounder with great explosion when he's going after a board (or loose ball for that matter). You don't see a whole lot of guys who jump their highest on every rebound that they try to corral, but Dingba really gets off the floor and consistently rebounds at or above rim-level, including on the offensive end. Another thing he provides offensively, is his strength and willingness to attack the rim. He loves drawing contact to get to the line, and is very good at finishing through the foul. His explosiveness, strength and the fact that he's constantly attacking the rim makes him a tough defensive assignment, even though he doesn't have a hugely diverse skill-set or post game. On the defensive end, he has become much better defending away from the basket, even to the point where he may be able to guard some wings. He certainly will do a great job of defending face up fours, as well as power players because of his strength. He's also very good at blocking shots without fouling.
Two things you wanted the most, this kid brings.
He should move to the top of the board now, hopefully. Only a matter of time before Uconn comes in.
