Unfortunately the Pats will trade 1 of those picks for future picks (probably the team's #1 next year and their #3 or #4 next year) and use the other of the two picks to take either an OL or a TE, even though they clearly need a pass rusher and/or secondary help.
One of these f-ing years Belichichick will go for a top flight guy instead of the f-ing "value" that has kept them a few plays away from winning another Superbowl.

What does it say?
Pointless, what they're going to package both their 1s plus to get him? Nope
Are you saying they shouldn't package their picks at the very end of the first round to grab one of the best 7 talents in the draft (Luck, RG3, Kalil, Blackmon, Richardson, Keeks and Claiborne)? I completely disagree. With the salary structure in place, those early round picks are much, much, MUCH more valuable than they were just a couple of years ago.

As I posted before the draft, with the new salary structure in place, if you see a player you like, you spend picks to trade up and draft him. Perhaps the Pats didn't value Keeks as much as was rumored. After all, Keeks is an MLB in a 4-3 (as opposed to the normal Pats D of a 3-4). Nonetheless, I agree with what you are saying... too often the Pats (who have been that 1 player away from winning it all) have settled for depth and value. There is nothing wrong with that being your normal strategy. But, once in a while you need to make that splash when you are certain of a projected player.

I reverse-psychologied Belichick into trading up twice with their first two picks, and taking a pass-rushing DE and a LB. This goes against everything they've done during their stretch of success. Let's hope they've strengthened areas of weakness and these picks pay off.

HJS wrote:The Pats old theory of stockpiling later picks worked great in the old world where teams killed their cap by drafting kids high. But, this is a different world now with the much needed rookie structure. You will once again start to see the natural progression of teams rising and falling (which is what the NFL always meant to have happen via the draft). These last 5-10 years saw teams at the top and bottom languish mainly because the draft was killing the worst teams.
Thats said, the Pats ultimately got into the whole trading up swing of things. To get Jones they traded a 3rd to move 6 spots. Strangely, to get Hightower, they traded only a 4th to move up 10.
Is it me or does this draft simply underwhelm with talent? The top 7 players seem excellent. You might make a case for an additional 5 or so as legit first rounders. But, outside of that, I am incredibly underwhelmed. Perhaps, it was because so many kids left school early trying to beat the salary imposition.

branchinator wrote:I'm with HJS. This draft's talent pool hasn't exactly wowed me. I like the Pats' picks but they look like 2nd round talents in a good draft year. Both guys look skilled but neither looks very explosive.

Oh my God, no bullshit, from today's Globe:
The choice by the Panthers drew praise from BC coach Frank Spaziani. “A great choice,’’ he said. “He will be perfect for them. And it was the perfect pick for me as well since it came two minutes before my bedtime.’’

Nothing like Spaz validating everything we joke about.

How many times do these guys get branded to make it that puffy? No way it scars up like that after one branding.
