SW - what could have been? NBA body, D-League brain.
What do the C's have, 3 games before the playoffs? Ainge is just kicking the tires on a couple of big guys as he finalizes the playoff roster. Looking for healthy bodies for practice more than anything else...replaced Chris Wilcox with Ryan Hollins a few weeks ago (who they obviously aren't too impressed with), and now they are cutting the cord with Jermaine O'Neal. Playoff rotations get shorter, not longer. Only way either one of those guys get a sniff of playing time is if Stiemsma fouls out, and even then Doc would probably go with a small lineup.
It would be a great story if KG could knock some sense into SW and he could see the light, but I doubt it.

I always hope this is the shot that straightens him out, hopefully being on a veteran team will keep him in line.

Freakish talent.

I doubt we'll see him play at all during the playoffs, but unlike O'Neill at least he can actually put in some minutes.

Need to ammend my previous post: of course he will play in the last couple of games, the C's left half the team in Boston with the division clinched. However, I think he was signed too late to be on the playoff roster.

This is a no-brainer for the Cs. If he is still an idiot, it costs them nothing. If he is in a place where he wants to actually give the NBA a shot, then he is going to spend time with Kevin Garnett, a real professional, and he might develop into something for the future. And he is a body that can help with defense and on the boards right now, if he can play.

I bet he is on the playoff roster, and though I expect the rotations to shorten, he may get very small minutes if he has his act together. If not, they will just cut him.

He'll be competing for the handful of minutes when KG/Bass/Stiemsma aren't playing with Ryan Hollins. With that in mind, I could see him getting a little run, especially if he makes the most of his early minutes.

Edit: Just realized today is 4/20. Fitting.

Article on a 2nd chance: http://www.milforddailynews.com/sports/pros_and_colleges/x1982680418/Williams-relishes-a-second-chance

BOSTON —
*** ******* had been out of basketball for nearly a month with few prospects of playing in the NBA again this year.

The former Boston College star’s troubled career had endured stops with the Nets and Mavericks, contracts with teams in China, Israel and Puetro Rico, and arrests for trespassing and felony criminal mischief in the five years since he was dismissed at the Heights and picked No. 17 in the NBA draft.

So it seemed a little odd at first when the call came from his agent about an offer, and it came with a qualifier.

“I don’t know how you’re going to feel about this,” Williams said of the conversation. “But it’s Boston.”

Williams’ first reaction?

“That’s fine,” he said. “I know a lot of people in Boston.”

Williams said when he signed with the Celtics on April 20 he had no fear about going back to the city that included such a tumultuous, and ultimately doomed, college career. And after spending six weeks on the Celtics bench – often at the very end of it – he is still fine with being back in the place where he became famous for his shot-blocking ability, and infamous for his off-court trouble at BC.

“I’m definitely a different person than I was at 18 and 21,” the 25-year-old Williams said before last night’s Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals at TD Garden. “It’s only growth. That’s what you expect from living every day. The way I left Boston College, I didn’t expect to ever be playing for the Celtics. So you know I’m just grateful. I’m loving it, man.”

Williams said he’s happy to get a chance to hang out with some people he still knows from BC, and is even happier he’s gotten a chance to be around the likes of Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce almost every day even though practice time with them has been limited due to the condensed playoff schedule.

“It’s just a great learning experience,” Williams said. “Getting to be around this group of guys, we’ve been together for a while now, but you don’t know how long you’re going to stay together, so you try to take everybody and appreciate it. You try to take something away from every moment.”

“He’s a guy who got drafted pretty high,” Allen said. “He’s been waffling back and forth in the league, and in the D-League, and so now when you’re around these guys you get to see the nature of how this is done at such a high level — from veteran players, to young talented players, and from a team that’s destined to win a championship.

“You have everything in front of you to watch and see how you have to prepare yourself to play at such a high level. Moving forward, you should always say, ‘Hey, I’ve seen the blueprint.’ ”

Williams averaged 3.7 points and 4.0 rebounds for the Celtics late in the regular season, then began the playoffs in a suit as one of the team’s inactives. But after Avery Bradley’s season-ending shoulder surgery during the conference semifinals, Williams got the call to don the uniform over first-round pick JaJuan Johnson, and has been doing his best to stay ready for any chance at playing time with extra shooting at the gym and before games.

“Kevin (Garnett) preaches to us that we’re 15 strong and it’s going to take all of us to be champions,” he said. “If we win it, all of us get rings. You come in every day trying to be a champion, trying to be strong. You don’t want to be the weak link.”

After so many stops at so many outposts around the NBA D-League and the world, Williams chooses not to look at the past or future, but stay in the present.

“I take it every day at a time,” he said. “I don’t even take it a couple of weeks at a time, I take it a day at a time.

“You never know in this business what’s going to happen. I was in Dallas (in February) and I expected to be there now. So you just work hard and try to do your best to be the best you can be at the end of every day.

“I love and appreciate it, man. Not many people can be in a privileged position like this.”
