Soccer is one of the few sports that I would rather watch the women than the men. Volleyball, tennis (as long as it doesn't involve a Williams sister), swimming/diving, and gymnastics being the others.

Great strike from the youngest player on the team. In a lot of ways I think the womens' game is more exciting than the mens'. These are some ladies with great ball skills.

Interesting dynamic with the women's team seemingly getting a free pass for that epic gag job. I have to believe that the mens team would be roundly criticized for losing a Cup Final in that fashion (not that they'll ever get there). Or for that matter any mens team in any sport in any championship game.

I actually flipped back and forth and watched the 2nd half. It was clear US was dominating and Japan was holding on for dear life.

It's interesting that this is getting no news as an epic choke job. Just look at the front page of SI.com

Japan won the Women's World Cup in stunning fashion. The U.S., even in defeat, created its own legacy. This was about great athletes playing in a compelling event.

It didn't take long for the obligatory: What does this do for soccer in America? and What does this do for women's sports in America? questions to flow that follow any non-mainstream event that gets mainstream coverage.

It does nothing but marginally increase its popularity. I hate that this discussion comes up whenever there's a big soccer craze in America simply because it gives ammo to the mouthbreathers that hate soccer in every form because of claims of them being pussies and whatnot. It's a niche sport that will gain a following during important events such as the World Cup, Euros and the Champions League Final. Other than that it's not going to supplant any of the other major sports.
