I know Jagr, but I was wondering if it was "that" Nedved. Hadn't gotten around to looking it up yet.

It is, in fact the same Nedved. He is the second oldest player in the Olympics, with 43 year old Teemu Selanne being the oldest at 43. I am also thoroughly enjoying the corpse of Sandish Ozolinsh (41 years young!) and Latvia giving the despicable Team Canada everything they can handle. I have to say Chief Teddy has done a hell of a job despite coming up short.

Was the Latvian goalie out of his mind or something? Price had seen 8 shots when I had to leave the office, the Latvian guy 40.

Pretty much

Also had a loose puck on the goal line saved by his defenseman's glove, not sure how that wasn't a penalty shot (didn't have sound on, different rules?)

bignick33 {l Wrote}:I mentioned this in the NHL Playoff thread, but this is probably a better place for it. This morning I got carried away and mocked up a 2014 Team USA

claver2010 {l Wrote}:They hit on it during the broadcast but the 2014 US team is going to have a heavy college representation (especially in net with probably Miller, Quick & Cory)

Regarding the goalies, I think until he shows signs of slowing down drastically, Thomas is a shoe-in. The Americans under consideration would be Jimmy Howard, Craig Anderson (proven playoff goalie), and possibly Al Montoya if he has a big 2012-2013 season with a team other than the Islanders. I would also consider John Blue for old time's sake.

For shits and giggles:

Goalies:

Ryan Miller (MI, Michigan State)
Jonathan Quick (CT, UMass)
Tim Thomas (MI, UVM)
or
Jimmy Howard (NY, Maine) if TT slows down or there is an injury to one of the above, who are incidentally the same three that were on the roster in 2010

Forwards(asterisks next to the natural centers):

Ryan Kessler (MI, Ohio State)*
Patrick Kane (NY, OHL)
Zach Parise (MN, North Dakota)

Joe Pavelski (WI, Wisconsin)*
Bobby Ryan (NJ, OHL)
Phil Kessel (MI, Minnesota)

Davis Backes (MN, Minnesota State)*
Dustin Brown (NY, OHL)
Jason Pomminville (from QC but dual-citizen who now resides in NY, QMJHL)

TJ Oshie (WA, UND) *
Paul Stastny (Born in QC but dual citizen who went to HS in MO, University of Denver)*
Ryan Callahan (NY, OHL)

Taxi Squad:

Derek Stepan* (MN, Wisconsin)
Max Pacioretty (CT, Michigan)

Defensemen:

Ryan Suter (WI, Wisconsin)
Ryan McDonagh (MN, Wisconsin)

Keith Yandle (MA, QMJHL)
Nick Leddy (MN, Minnesota)

Eric Johnson (MN, Minnesota)
Jack Johnson (IN, Michigan)

John Carlson (MA, OHL)

Coaches:

John Tortorella (MA, Maine)
Peter Laviolette (MA, Westfield State)
Scott Gordon (MA, BC)
or
Joe Sacco (MA,BU) (it's amazing how many coaches there are from Boston; oh, and screw Ron Wilson)

Edit: Realize I just overlooked Dustin Byfuglien. Other snubs/possibilities are Blake Wheeler, JVR, Brandon Dubinsky, Brian Boyle, Cam Fowler, Ron Hainsey, Matt Carle, Alex Goligoski, and Brooks Orpik. I intentionally selected puck-movers on the back end because the USA is so big and tough up front.

not bad

The refs just missed it and you can't call a retrospective penalty shot based on replay.

Anyone surprised, though? It's a speed and skill game now, and Torts is trying to coach things a different way. Chrissake he wanted Callahan on the team. I loved the guy with the Rangers but he's past his prime.

USA is also hurt by the North America format way more than Canada. Even if Torts wouldn't take them, they would be better off with Gaudreau, Larkin, Eichel and probably Mathews up front and Jones and maybe Gotisbherre on the blue line.

A stat that sticks out is USA outhitting Canada, 38-14. The hosts controlled the puck and controlled the game. When the Americans lead in hits by such a wide margin, it’s not a stat to be proud of. It means they were playing without the puck and chasing.

Would this lineup beat the World Cup lineup? They really only seem weaker at goalie and maybe too offensive on D.

Chris Kreider - Tyler Johnson - Phil Kessel
Bobby Ryan - Paul Stastny - Kyle Okposo
Jason Pominville - Alex Galchenyuk - Kevin Hayes
Brock Nelson - Nick Bonino - Craig Smith

Keith Yandle - Kevin Shattenkirk
Nick Leddy - Justin Faulk
Torey Krug - Jake Gardiner

Ryan Miller
Jimmy Howard
Craig Anderson

Put Bonino on the line with Kessel since the two found their groove in the SCF, but otherwise yes, you might be right.

Christ a line of Kreider-Bonino-Kessel is amazing to imagine.

I mean, maybe? But in a short tournament, you should build a roster closer to this than the one USA brought. Yeah, you may not have the talent Canada does top to bottom but at least put enough skill on the ice to give yourself a shot to win one game.

good for gionta making the team, being named captain and all but this is miserable.

i'd consider myself a pretty diehard hockey fan but I have zero interest in watching the men's tournament.

The worst thing about the Olympics is watching Toelvanen (sp?) dominating and thinking what might have been if someone had not been asleep at the switch at BC admissions. Word has it he is going to Nashville when the games are over.
