He crushed Heatley the way Heatley crushed his teammate to death when he was shitfaced drunk a few years ago. Honestly, why Danny Heatley is still playing in the NHL instead of rotting in jail is beyond me. Of course, Canada is the country where Todd Bertuzzi escaped jail time despite assaulting and ruining the life on a guy who wasn't even looking at him and Graham James was allowed to rape one boy after another as long as he kept the Swift Current Broncos at the top of the WHL standings.

Fuck Canada and fuck Canadians. They are a nation of cowards. First of all, they owe their existence to their opposition to the principles of the Declaration of Independence. They are a nation of bootlicking English-wannabe 74. Second, their corrupt ponzi scheme of a socialist economy exists only because they have the fortune of living next to the biggest economic dynamo the world has ever known. They repay our largesse by stabbing us in the back--giving aid and comfort to the draft dodging traitors, inflicting Celine Dion and Bryan Adams on the culture and turning otherwise lovely New England shore towns ugly with hairy fat people walking around in banana hammocks.

In a just world Cindy Crosby would be powering his wheelchair by blowing into a tube.

Heatley wrapped his Lambo around a pole in Atlanta whilst still playing for the Thrashers so it's more of an American justice system issue (and an issue of Dan Snyder's family bestowing forgivenss upon him) than him being Canadien.

bceagles24 {l Wrote}:Amazing game. I love this team. It isn't an All Star team,it is a hockey team. 2014 is the USA's to win IMO. Ypu lose some key guys like Rafalski and Langenbrunner but there are guys waiting in the wings to step in. I was really impressed with a number of the guys. I love Ryan Callahan's style of play. Same with Brooks Orpik. That guy gives it his all every single play and is willing to sacrifice his body to block a shot every time. Also that line of Backes,Bobby Ryan, and I believe Drury was very good the last couple of games. Really impressed with the Johnsons as well. They played very well. This country has a bright hockey future. On a sidenote Rafalski shouldn't have been on the ice at the end. He was exhausted and you could tell, and he let Crosby go right to the net. Also Corey Perry is a bitch.

Assuming NHL players go to the next Olympics. Which is a BIG assumption at this point.

Ratings for Yesterday:
17.6 rating/33 share.

This means 1 out of every 3 people with a TV were watching the game.

It was the highest rated non-football athletic event since 2004.

It beat all baseball since the '04 World Series
It beat all Final Fours since '98
It beat all NBA Finals since '98

Impressive.

just like some claims from the superbowl... how much of this was weather in the northeast related (i.e. people were stuck in their homes so what else were they going to do)?

I don't think it was that big of a factor because the northeast (and the upper midwest) is where hockey tends to draw best.

weather was fine on Sunday. Not sunny but not really bad. Just cloudy and cool. Nothing that would keep any one who wasn't a gigantic pussy at home.

I mentioned this in the NHL Playoff thread, but this is probably a better place for it. This morning I got carried away and mocked up a 2014 Team USA

claver2010 {l Wrote}:They hit on it during the broadcast but the 2014 US team is going to have a heavy college representation (especially in net with probably Miller, Quick & Cory)

Regarding the goalies, I think until he shows signs of slowing down drastically, Thomas is a shoe-in. The Americans under consideration would be Jimmy Howard, Craig Anderson (proven playoff goalie), and possibly Al Montoya if he has a big 2012-2013 season with a team other than the Islanders. I would also consider John Blue for old time's sake.

For shits and giggles:

Goalies:

Ryan Miller (MI, Michigan State)
Jonathan Quick (CT, UMass)
Tim Thomas (MI, UVM)
or
Jimmy Howard (NY, Maine) if TT slows down or there is an injury to one of the above, who are incidentally the same three that were on the roster in 2010

Forwards(asterisks next to the natural centers):

Ryan Kessler (MI, Ohio State)*
Patrick Kane (NY, OHL)
Zach Parise (MN, North Dakota)

Joe Pavelski (WI, Wisconsin)*
Bobby Ryan (NJ, OHL)
Phil Kessel (MI, Minnesota)

Davis Backes (MN, Minnesota State)*
Dustin Brown (NY, OHL)
Jason Pomminville (from QC but dual-citizen who now resides in NY, QMJHL)

TJ Oshie (WA, UND) *
Paul Stastny (Born in QC but dual citizen who went to HS in MO, University of Denver)*
Ryan Callahan (NY, OHL)

Taxi Squad:

Derek Stepan* (MN, Wisconsin)
Max Pacioretty (CT, Michigan)

Defensemen:

Ryan Suter (WI, Wisconsin)
Ryan McDonagh (MN, Wisconsin)

Keith Yandle (MA, QMJHL)
Nick Leddy (MN, Minnesota)

Eric Johnson (MN, Minnesota)
Jack Johnson (IN, Michigan)

John Carlson (MA, OHL)

Coaches:

John Tortorella (MA, Maine)
Peter Laviolette (MA, Westfield State)
Scott Gordon (MA, BC)
or
Joe Sacco (MA,BU) (it's amazing how many coaches there are from Boston; oh, and screw Ron Wilson)

Edit: Realize I just overlooked Dustin Byfuglien. Other snubs/possibilities are Blake Wheeler, JVR, Brandon Dubinsky, Brian Boyle, Cam Fowler, Ron Hainsey, Matt Carle, Alex Goligoski, and Brooks Orpik. I intentionally selected puck-movers on the back end because the USA is so big and tough up front.

Good list. I think Shattenkirk makes it on the back end over Leddy, at least as of right now. Whitney could also be considered because of his experience but he's almost never healthy so who knows there.

I also think Stafford gets considered. He fell off a little this year but was one of the hottest (non-ghey) players in the final month or so. Probably a few more out there but I don't really feel like going over every NHL roster at the moment.

I will never understand how Scuderi continually gets overlooked. He is one of the best lockdown defensemen in the game--it isn't a coincidence that he played massive minutes when the Pens won the Cup and was on the ice against Detroit's 1st line the entire series (and was double shifting at the end of the games) and he has brought a level of stability to the Kings blue line that cannot be discounted.

When Orpik was taken over him in 2010 I was absolutely amazed.

I like Scuderi. He's a workhorse, but he'll be 36 in 2014. Will he still have the wheels to skate with the cream of the crop of international competition?

2014 olympics still a ways a way. But I have to think Thomas will be too old by then.

Not a fan of Oshie or Pomminville.

And who knows what young USA star will step up? Who's to say Kreider won't be playing himself into consideration by this time next year?

That being said, Callahan is a shoo in to be team captain for the next 2-3 olympics.

bchockey04 {l Wrote}:2014 olympics still a ways a way. But I have to think Thomas will be too old by then.

I don't think they can keep TT off unless he's injured or clearly regressed at that point. He's been the best American goalie by far over the last three year. He's already defied biology a bit my maintaining his extremely high level of athleticism. You're right though that things are subject to change.

Not a fan of Oshie or Pomminville.

I actually think Oshie is pretty close to a shoe-in. He put up 54 points this year in a very defensive system after coming off a bad injury. I think his upside is 70+ points, and I think he'll hit it sooner rather than later if he stays healthy. I also like that he's brings both finesse and an edge. Pomminville doesn't really bring the edge, but like Oshie, he's extremely talented. And, like Oshie, he can play both center and wing. That being said, I could go either way on Pomminville.

And who knows what young USA star will step up? Who's to say Kreider won't be playing himself into consideration by this time next year?

So you're saying I should wait until the day before the selections are announced to do a mock? I realize we're two years away.

That being said, Callahan is a shoo in to be team captain for the next 2-3 olympics.

I really like Callahan too both for his leadership and for his versatility. I was able to put together two really good high end offensive lines, but the bottom two lines will have to be grinding lines. Callahan (actually, like Oshie, in my opinion) could fit in on either.

Oh agreed. I wasn't overly criticizing your mock draft from 2 years out, just thinking out loud.

Although i really strongly feel Thomas won't be around.

It is a consideration--his age that is--but if you watched this series against Vancouver he hasn't lost a step yet and he is just about the steadiest player I have ever seen. Scuderi doesn't make mental errors and he is also unbelievably efficient in the way he handles his business. I sometimes think this is why he has always been overlooked (at BC he was in the shadow of Mottau and Orpik), in Pittsburgh he was in the shadow of Whitney and Orpik, and yet, in college and the pros the coaches always made sure he was on the ice at the end of games. There is no flash to him at all but he also very rarely makes a mistake.

Tough loss this morning to the russians. Refs called a shit ton of penalties on the US in the first period and then put the whistles away for both teams in the 3rd period.

Gaudreau was robbed by a great play from the russian goalie on an easy tap in the opening moments of the 1st period. He flashed at times (slick move around the dman late in the 3rd), but it looks like he is still feeling his way out. His linemate, Rocco Grimaldi, is a nifty player for fighting souix.

Seth Jones is a good player (espcially for his age competing against guys 2-3 years older), but he needs to learn how to use his size if he wants to become the complete all around defenseman everyone claims. The GWG for russia was on a play where the russian used his body to protect the puck and muscled is way right around Jones (who seems to play the puck instead of the man quite a bit).

After a slow start Gaudreau has really picked it up with 5 goals in the last 2 games including a hat trick this morning in the US 7-0 rout of Czech, he's now the leading scorer in the tournament.

They'll play Canada in the semis at 4 AM tomorrow morning

He could have had 3 if he had just buried that backhand in the 1st period after a sick move around the defenseman.
