BC @ UML -1/23/10

Postby claver2010 on Sat Jan 23, 2010 1:46 pm

Considering I'm 2-0 in 2010 with game threads and this team needs a win I'll start the thread.

We are coming off a very, very disappointing loss against BU; UML won at home against Merrimack. We are still in 2nd but need points to make a run towards winning HE regular season, UML is fighting for home ice being only a point behind Maine for the final home spot. UML is a very balanced scoring team with 8 players having at least 15 points but no one over 23. They play a real rotation in net both Hutton & Hamilton are seniors. Hutton is 7-6 but (I believe) #1 in HE in GAA at 2.15 and considering they played Hamilton last night I assume we will see Hutton. Need some points and BC usually brings up a home ice advantage to UML and tonight will be no different a solid group of students going up.

A second goal is disallowed on a Demoulin rebound when BC is shorthanded off what the radio guys said was a BS penalty. York is apparently heated. It isn't reviewed.

BC loses 3-1. ENG scored after a failed no-call of icing. Our radio guys are absolutely going off on the refs, but the bottom line is that we need to play better. If history is a guide, we usually start to peak in late Feb, but right now we aren't playing remotely close to what I think our potential is, even considering injuries and questionable reffing.

FWIW some students tried to start a "Shots shots shots shots (x15)! everybody!" cheer at the BU game when it was all passing, no shooting. I'm sad it didn't catch on.

Made the trip to Lowell last night and here are my thoughts:

Goaltending was fine. Muse let in 2, one was a breakaway. I thought he played well.

Defense was not so good. Alber looks like he's a high school player out there. He just isn't cutting it at this level and it's showing. Lyles is just a slightly better version of Alber. He had a couple (or at least one) of costly penalties last night. The one that I'm thinking of occurred deep in the third period with about 5 minutes remaining. Just can't make those mistakes. He is getting beat and his rust from not playing is showing. Furthermore, IMO we're getting killed by the lack of play from Dumoulin. He looks like he doesn't know the angles and was constantly getting beat on the boards. He's got to pick up his play with our injury situation. It's also didn't help that Sneep didn't play well. The breakaway goal happened because Shea wasn't in the right position and was caught napping. Honestly, they only defender I was satisfied with last night was Samuelson.

Offense wasn't that bad. Put essentially three in the net. My take on the disallowed goals was this: Te first disallowed goal was a legit goal. It didn't look like it was batted in. The second one wasn't a goal because the net was clearly off before it went in, but it was also very very clear that the net was moved by a Lowell player. That, I assume, is why York went nuts. It was for very good reason.

Also, if anybody heard the radio feed and had an explanation as to why the ENG by Lowell wasn't icing I'd love to hear it (as would York). It clearly looked like icing to me and York was furious.

The reality is we could have easily won the game. But the defense needs to pick it up in a big way.
