Should we do a name tag event, there is not excuse for most of us to not be able to drive down.

I think that's the night he's hosting a "find steve donahue, the most misunderstood coach ever, a new job that's worthy of all his greatness" cavalcade. You might want to find a different hot tub to befoul.
now in the street there is violence
and, and a lots of work to be done
no place to hang out our washing
and, and i can't blame all on the sun
good god we gonna rock down to electric avenue
and then we'll take it higher

Piece of advice: don't dress the same and call yourselves "York's Dorks" or "Jerry's Fairies" again. It's fucking embarrassing.

Will do for the both of you, FYI there are tickets floating around in various places: stubhub, USCHO has a ticket forum that a lot of people have had success with: http://board.uscho.com/forumdisplay.php ... and-Events

I haven't been to philly in forever, any suggestions on hotels? Ideally close to the arena unless that's in a shitty area

There's a Holiday Inn (and absolutely nothing else) within walking distance of the Stadium. I would not recommend it at all. The area is a wasteland of warehouses, trucking depots, staiums and parking lots.

Here is what you should do: there are lots of downtown Philly hotels near all the good bars, restaurants, etc. in Center City. Use Tripadvisor or some other site to find one within your price range and if it is affiliated with one of the major chains you'll be fine. Marriott has a huge hotel attached to the convention center (the site of the legendary first hot-tub meet up), as well as a Courtyard, etc. nearby. The Broad Street subway runs in a straight shot from downtown to the stadium area. Maybe a 25 min. ride tops. Be warned, it is an old subway sustem so it looks like crap (City Hall station is old and dumpy), but it is generally safe, efficient, and will be full of people heading down to the stadium area from the Center City hotels. You can walk to City Hall station from virtually all of the major Center City hotels.

Since most of you will probably be staying there, we all ought to meet up in the bar at the lobby of the Ritz before the game. :) Beautiful place. We can stumble out the door to the Walnut street stop of the Broad Street subway and then go straight to the game. Actually, the place to be beforehand will be Xfinity live, which is a huge sports bar/restaurant complex right across from the stadium.

Now that I think of it, we did a whole thread on Philly hotels, bars, restaurants, etc. when the foot was planning his little trip here. I'll try to find and bump that, I think it was in Mary Anne's. So, the bottom line is: stay in Center City, pregame at Xfinity Live, and go to one of the Center City or South Philadelphia-Italian restaurants while you're here. I think you'll enjoy it.

If any of the other Philly posters have suggestions I'd be interested to hear.

Re: Warm Up the Hot Tubs

Postby Bryn Mawr Eagle on Mon Mar 31, 2014 8:46 am

These are some of the recommendations from last August, updated a bit.

1. Downtown (or "Center City") Philadelphia is very safe and you should feel totally safe walking around Center City late into the night. Note that "totaly safe" means you are fine walking around, but you will see some bums/panhandlers, and many people of the "speedy" variety. But that's life in the big city. The Marriott is one of the main convention hotels in town and there are lots of restaurants in the area and police around for the tourists. You guys wil be fine.

For the history buffs, the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall are worth a visit if you have time and have not seen them. They are at most a 10 min. cab ride from the Center City hotels, and may be in walking distace depending on where you stay. Keep in mind that the numbered streets in Philly are 1/10 of a mile apart, so you can use that to help determine walking distances.

2. There is a Hard Rock cafe about a block from the main Marriott. If you stay at the Marriott you will be right above the Reading Terminal Market - an old-timey food emporium on the first floor of an old rail road shed that may feel chaotic (it is not the place to go if you are looking for a calm, sit-down lunch), but which has some great sandwhiches and specialty foods and desserts - something for everyone. There are some kid-friendly chains nearby - like Maggianno's. If you are looking for some better food or travelling on an expense account, there are all the normal steak house chains within a 5 min. cab ride in Center City (Morton's, Smith and Wollensky, Del Frisco's, Ruth Chris - and you can walk to the Capital Grill), as well as a few local spots as well like Barclay Prime. There are also literally dozens of other great restaurants withing a 5 min. walk or cab ride. If you have time, money, and maybe are bringing the family for a long weekend, and want some more unique dining experiences, make a reservation at either the Moshulu: http://www.moshulu.com/ or the Victor Cafe: http://victorcafe.com/ They are both a 10 minute cab ride away but worth it. The Moshulu is an old sailing ship and has decent food. Really cool experience. If you or your family are into music, they will get a kick out of the Victor Cafe - it is an Italian restaurant in South Philly where the waiters/waitresses are all aspiring opera singers and occassionally break into an aria or show tune. They are excellent and it is really unique and cool, even though it is mostly opera. Trust me on that one. The host or hostess at either place can call you a return cab when you get your bill.

Also, if you are a movie buff, Victor Cafe was featured in one of the Rocky movies, while the Moshulu has a cameo in The Godfater II - in the scene where the child Vito Corleone first arrives in New York.

3. There is a decent sports bar in the Marrioitt hotel. But the Philly BC club usually has their events at the Fox and Hound (more on that from Philly below).

Philly then posted the following:

If you're looking for upscale Italian check out Branzino on 17th Street, a few blocks from the hotel (maybe 10 minute walk). My personal favorite of the cheesesteak places is Jim's on South Street, it kinda has a bad rap among some locals for being touristy, but can't argue with the product....although IIRC there's also a Tony Luke's inside the Reading Terminal. Also if you're looking for pizza just stop in any sketchy-looking mom-and-pop joint, 90% chance it'll be delicious.

You're also not far from Chinatown, which can be pretty hit or miss in terms of restaurants. I've usually had good luck with Joy Tsin Lau but it was awful the last time I went, seemed like they dumped oil all over the food after it was done cooking. Penang is a Malaysian place, only been there once but it was outstanding. My advice for Chinatown would be find a place that has the highest percentage of Asianed people inside and you'll be all set.

As for a sports bar, there are tons....my friends and I usually go to Fox and Hound, which is on 15th and Spruce.

And for anyone who may be reading this thread and is traveling to Philly sans wife and kids in the future, there are at least a dozen Asianed massage parlors within a 5-block radius of the Mariott (none of them are marked, look in the back of one of the free weekly papers for ads with the addresses), the Sugarland casino is on the sketchy side but still can be a good time and is often frequented by out-of-town athletes, and the non-ghetto strip clubs are mostly on Delaware Ave.

You can always spend Sat at Atlantic City.

I booked my hotel a few weeks ago with points at the Sheraton downtown. Still deciding if Friday is a vacation day or if I will work remotely.

They have not released the fan guide for this year, but here is last years.
http://www.ncaa.com/sites/default/files ... EBSITE.pdf

Any indication on the location/time of Johnny's Hobey ceremony next Friday? Based on the number of events at the arena on last year's schedule, it looks like there will be a lot of riding the metro back and forth to South Philly.

I'll also throw out there, Monk's Cafe on 16th(?) is a mecca for beer snobs. Phillies are in town against the Brewers on Weds/Thurs and Marlins over the weekend, games are at 7 pm Weds-Sat and then 1:30 on Sunday. Most of you probably know this but the sports venues are all co-located, so you could easily walk over there probably in time for the 3rd inning on Thursday barring OT. Also, between the Phillies games and the FF, Xfinity Live and McFadden's will be absolutely banged out.

Has anyone seen anything about tickets for the Hobey ceremony?? Can't find anything on the NCAA website
