Not surprising they gave it to SR over a SO.

For comparison's sake:
LeBlanc: 42 games: 13-37-50
Gaudreau: 35 games: 21-30-51

LeBlanc has scored 1 goal in the last 5ish weeks (7 games) including an impressive 0-0-0 line in 3 games in the NCAA tourney

Gaudreau wasn't on the level on the Gerbe or Gionta hosing but I hate how year plays into this
Bush, George H W
Cosby, Bill
Disick, Scott
Flair, Ric
Griffin, Kathy
Khamenei, Ali
McCain, John
Pele

It is really unfortunate that supporting your country in a mid-season international competition makes it almost impossible to win a POY award if you are an elite underclassman.

Frankly this has a repeat of the gionta screw job several years ago. With the strong likelihood of gillies or hellebuyck having monster seasons next year, I don't see how johnny can win unless he sits out the WJC (maybe he is too old?).

On-ice performance and seniority weren't all that went into this year's Hobey vote; Gaudreau had the bad luck to be facing an "inspirational" competitor. LeBlanc was a fifth-year medical redshirt coming back from a horrific leg injury (apparently about as bad as the injury to that Louisville basketball player) suffered early in the 2011-2012 season. Coming back with a metal rod in his leg to lead his team to the Frozen Four was the kind of story line the voters would eat up; added to the other factors, it made the outcome rather predictable. One is tempted to suggest that, nearly a century after his death, Hobey Baker's squeaky-clean image of slab-jawed heroism (and it's not pure myth by any means -- he was a rather remarkable individual, on and off the ice) still exerts a certain influence over the voting for the award.
