DU Pioneers zero in on finalist for new hockey head coach, source says

By Mike Chambers

The University of Denver has tentative plans to hire a new hockey coach over the weekend and make the announcement early next week, a school source familiar with the search said Thursday.

The finalists to succeed George Gwozdecky are Seth Appert, a former DU assistant under Gwozdecky and the current head coach at Rensselear; Derek Lalonde, who succeeded Appert at DU before becoming the head coach of the Green Bay Gamblers of the U.S. Hockey League (junior-A amateur); Jim Montgomery, a former Maine star and NHL player who is head coach and general manager of the USHL's Dubuque Fighting Saints; and Boston College associate head coach Greg Brown.

Appert and Lalonde have met with the search committee. Montgomery is scheduled make his on-campus interview Friday and Brown by Saturday.

Don Granato, head coach of the U.S. national development program's 18-under team, no longer is considered a candidate. He is with his team in Sochi, Russia, preparing for the world championships.

DU vice chancellor for athletics Peg Bradley-Doppes has declined to discuss the firing of Gwozdecky on April 1, along with the procedure and timetable for his replacement.

Lalonde, 38, was the No. 2 assistant and goaltending coach at DU for five seasons beginning in 2006. In 2011-12, his first season with the Gamblers, he led them to the USHL championship, finishing 47-9-4. This season's team is 35-23-4, tied for second place in the eight-team Eastern Conference heading into this weekend's final regular-season games.

Appert, 38, is 99-136-31 in seven years at Rensselear, which in 2011 qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995. Appert helped construct the DU teams that won back-to-back national titles in 2004 and 2005.

Montgomery, 43, worked under Appert at Rensselear and previously served as Jeff Jackson's assistant at Notre Dame. Montgomery is Maine's all-time leading scorer with 301 points (103 goals), captained the Black Bears' NCAA title team in 1992-93 and is one of only three players to have his jersey retired at Alfond Arena. He played pro hockey from 1993-2005, including six seasons with five NHL teams.

Brown, 45, has spent the past nine seasons at Boston College, which has won three national titles (2008, 2010 and 2012) in five trips to the Frozen Four in that stretch. Brown is a two-time U.S. Olympian, playing for the 1988 and 1992 hockey teams, and recently was named an assistant coach for this year's U.S. world junior team.
