Semi Final Round: BC vs BU

Well we play BU again and it's never easy, no matter the records. JP is retiring and I'm sure the players want to give him the present of beating BC one last time and keep their NCAA hopes alive. I'm guessing they have to win the HE Tournament to have a shot at the NCAA.

The PP was not good and did not capitalize on all those chances they had, too many to count. They had that 5 on 3 when they scored a PP goal.

Lucky no one was injured badly, especially the knee-to-knee on Arnold and even Mullane had problems skating off during a shift after being hit

It's a concern to me that teams are gooning up on BC. MC and PC have done the same thing. Playing hard physical game is one thing but hitting to injure or knock a player out of a game is a very big concern, especially when you have small build players like JG, Whitney, etc. They already lost Hayes for the season, and hopefully they can stay healthy and keep their cool when teams goon up on them and make them pay on the PP.

The field is set for Friday. Lowell plays Providence while BC plays BU.

I like the pairings for now. Lowell and PC can beat up on each other and hopefully we can handle BU in the night cap.

Interesting field. BC and Lowell are locks for the tourney and PC and BU need to win it all to make it. You always wonder how that motivates. Can't imagine York will be able to coach.

Agreed I'd be shocked if York is behind the bench this weekend

The rehab alone from that surgery he had to go through last time sounded absolutely miserable

Well great experience for Cav and brown to send Jackie to retirement

Whitney Named 61st Recipient of Walter Brown Award

Senior F Steven Whitney is the 19th Boston College hockey player to earn the Walter Brown Award.

March 19, 2013

Boston College senior forward Steven Whitney has been named the 61st recipient of the Walter Brown Award, presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England, the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston announced on Tuesday.

Whitney finished first in the final balloting ahead of runner-up Eric Hartzell of Quinnipiac and third-place finisher and teammate Johnny Gaudreau.

The Walter Brown Award is the oldest nationally-recognized college hockey honor. It was established in 1953 and named for the coach of the 1933 Massachusetts Rangers, which was the first American team to win the World Championship.

Whitney is the 19th BC player to earn the award and joins goaltender John Muse, who captured the honor in 2011, as two Eagle recipients in the last three years. Whitney also joins two of his Boston College coaches - Jerry York (1967) and Greg Brown (1990) - as Walter Brown Award recipients.

Whitney has recorded a career-high 43 points, including a league-best 25 goals, in 36 games in 2012-13. He ranks second among all players in college hockey in goals per game (0.69) and game-winning goals (six). The 5-foot-7, 167-pound forward checks in fourth on the national leaderboard with a +23 rating and 11th in points per game (1.19).

A native of Reading, Mass. and Lawrence Academy graduate, Whitney leads all players in college hockey in scoring down the stretch. He has scored 13 goals and 22 points in the third period of play.

In his stellar four-year career, Whitney has recorded 126 points - 54 goals and 72 assists - in 158 career games.

BC is back in action on Friday, March 22 against Boston University in the tournament's second semifinal game at 8 p.m. at TD Garden. Both semifinal games as well as Saturday's league championship are broadcast regionally by NESN and nationally by NBC Sports Network.

Happy Jack Parker Retirement Day

Some awards from the banquet last night:
Player of the Year: Gaudreau (only the 4th underclassman ever to win it. Leetch, Kariya, & Greg Brown)
1st team HE: Gaudreau (only unanimous), & Whitney
2nd team HE: Pat Wey
Rookie 1st team: Matheson (unanimous)
Defensive Defenseman: Pat Wey

Gaudreau also was named to the final 10 for the hobey, honestly surprised Whitney didn't make it

I'll be at the games tonight. What is the crowd going to be looking like? Lots of students or pretty dead?

Nice tip in by Smith. Hope Parker's career ends in 31:14. Also nice to see the students giving it to Parker at every opportunity.

I hope this is not what the post-York era will look like. It looks a lot like a Ceglarski team replete with a pathetic defense and panicked coaches.

BCs D is so bad. Mattheson is a moron.

BC better figure this out if they don't want a ticket to Toldeo next week

The D men are horrible. Ive watched this tired act all season. A good offensive team is going to maul this BC team

I think Leah Hextall belongs in a porno with a bad storyline. She's monotone, seems like she would be a bad actress and is kinda hot.

Dumb from Goudreau.

With the inclusion of Mattheson, I cant remeber disliking a BC hockey team as much as I do this one

You are an insufferable prick. Shut up. You do realize they are #4 in the country, heading to the NCAAs and have dealt with several injuries?

This is also not the #4 team in the country. Been playing poorly for a while now.

Could get hot and win the NCAAs, but the goaltending and D need to be better

Maybe so, but they let Parker leave in glorious fashion dick stomping them on national television. We better pray to God that York lasts for another decade because I have never seen a more panicky coaching staff in his absence. Either that or we are going to need to look outside the staff for a steady hand to lead the program when that sad day of reckoning comes.

The fact that this team is just not that good And hasn't been all year has a lot to do with everything.

Re coaching, sort of surprised no TO post BU goal to tie it at 2. Would've been a prototypical York call to slow everything down.

First, this team isn't of the same level the last 8ish years (sans 2009), we all knew that (we can discuss why I guess postseason). That being said the first 30ish minutes was some of the best this team has played in a long time. Pressure from all lines, pucks deep and completely dominating. BU looked like they had no shot of scoring.

The next 25 were absolutely disgusting on every level. I think the team had 3 shots in that time. Absolutely zero pressure, Milner was shaky, and the D, Jesus Christ the D, what a fucking abortion. I guess let's start w the fact that we have a F playing D when we have Sullivan playing on the 4th line and Jeke who was probably the most impressive FR D (sans Matheson) in a suit. Where are you Brian Dumoulin? Wasn't a single Dman that I had an iota of confidence in tonight.

1-7 on the powerplay. I like the loading up 1 unit, there isn't enough offensive talent to sustain 2 units but please 2nd unit at least gain the zone and try to sustain pressure.

Oh and I think BU just had another odd man rush.

Edit: That 5 min on Gaudreau was comical

I was at the game tonight and after they wen't up 2-0 it just became absolute trash.

On a sidenote why did BC's fan section suck? BU and UMASS-Lowell had more fans and they were cheering twice as loud. Did BC not let students know we were playing or what?

BC has led the east in attendance for several years running, the fan argument is dumb

thanks to our NU friend on USCHO I have found footage of escobedo's play last night:

I wasn't able to watch the game. That said, what I think we've been reminded of this year is just how important Jerry York is, not only as a big-picture leader of the program (everyone knows that), but also as an actual gameday coach.

I wouldn't chalk this game up to coaching, though as claver mentioned there were places to see York's steadying hand that may have helped. Though the team hasn't imploded this spectacularly since the Minnesota game, the problems that have been present all year were there:

- Shaky D
- Losing their focus at times
- Lack of depth/speed on offense

Keep looking for the team to turn it on or figure it out and make a run and since we're headed to the tourney it's still a possibility, but I've wondered if this was just a year where we didn't have the horses for awhile now.

On the other side, I hate that Parker gets this one on his way out. I wouldn't be surprised to see his team do their patented mid-2000s post Beanpot routine and pack it in tonight after winning the National Championship and end his career tonight, though. Small consolation.
