The same applies to Shawn Thornton and he's been a healthy scratch in each of the last two playoff series.

Regardless of the extra qualities I talked about I just don't think Mitchell brings more than Rupp

Oh totally agree. Mitchell just isn't a very good hockey player. Hell, the Maple Laffs let him go.

When Chris Kreider scored to break a 1-1 tie in the third period on Saturday, he did not just electrify the crowd at Madison Square Garden. At a convention of collegiate hockey coaches in Naples, Fla., Jerry York pumped his fist and smiled.

“I was a very proud coach,” said York, Kreider’s coach at Boston College until three weeks ago, when the Eagles defeated Ferris State for the N.C.A.A. championship. “I’m here at a hotel with a bunch of my peers and the Rangers have so many recent college players — Derek Stepan, Ryan McDonagh, Carl Hagelin. My guy Chris scores a goal. How can you not feel incredible about that?”

Kreider, who signed with the Rangers three days after winning the college title, has had that effect lately. Ever since Coach John Tortorella called him “an interesting cat” during the Rangers’ first-round series with Ottawa, Kreider has demonstrated what he was talking about.

Along with some scratching and clawing, Kreider has used his speed to become a vital factor in the Rangers’ title hopes. On Saturday, Kreider broke a 1-1 tie with a goal seven minutes into the third period and assisted on Brad Richards’s goal 90 seconds later.

“He’s showing us something more and more every night,” Richards said of Kreider.

In just his sixth game in the N.H.L., Kreider found himself making the interview rounds minutes after the Rangers’ victory.

“The entire experience is pretty overwhelming,” said Kreider, who turns 21 on Monday.

But he has not been overwhelmed between the singing of the national anthem and the sound of the final horn, which is what Tortorella alluded to. Kreider’s demeanor in the locker room is the same calm he exhibits on the ice.

“He didn’t say much when he first got here,” defenseman Dan Girardi said. “I’m sure he wanted to be the quiet kid, just trying to fit in. But we’ve encouraged him to say what’s on his mind, to ask any questions he may have.”

As a result, said McDonagh, Kreider “started asking a lot of questions.”

Kreider appeared bashful when these comments were relayed to him. He grinned a lot but didn’t say much as he sat in his locker-room stall, wearing the Broadway Hat — given by his teammates to the lunch-pail hero of the game — for the first time.

“This was only my sixth game, but I feel like I’ve been around a lot longer,” Kreider said. “I guess it feels that way because of all the help I’ve had.”

He regularly exchanges texts with York, who is not as surprised about Kreider’s rapid ascent as just about everyone else.

“You have to remember, he didn’t come from the University of Nowhere,” York said. “Chris played in two world junior championships for Team USA and was a part of two N.C.A.A. titles with us. But you do have to give him credit for stepping into the biggest market in the country and not just looking comfortable, but excelling.”

York is not alone with his Boston College pride. After Kreider’s third-period star turn, Parker Milner, his goaltender at Boston College, wrote on Twitter: “Are you kidding me, Kreids. Word is they are chanting Kreider at MSG.”

The chant could become a custom this spring. In a tight game, Kreider’s ability to create space for himself with speed is crucial. At the end of the second period, there were a total of 45 hits recorded in the game — 25 by the Rangers, 20 by the Capitals. At the same time, there were a combined 21 shots on goal by the teams — 13 by the Capitals and 8 by the Rangers.

One play made the difference in the third period. Kreider received a pass in the neutral zone from Stepan, skated into the offensive end and blasted a slap shot by Braden Holtby, the Capitals’ goalie.

After the game, Richards was asked if he had any idea Kreider would become so important to the Rangers.

“No, not really,” Richards said. “This is a pretty high level he’s jumped into. It shows you his learning curve, shows you his hockey I.Q. I didn’t expect that to happen.”

Neither did the Capitals.

As if Coach Champion needed anymore assists in recruiting... this glowing kreider press (especially about him being mentally ready) should easily enhance the already strong BC hockey brand.

There is also growing awareness among the professional ranks of the quality of the BC program from a preparation standpoint. The importance of this can not be understated, as it gives BC a tremendous advantage over most other college programs. Most franchises trust BC as much if not more than the high-level Candian Juniors leagues, which goes entirely against traditional hockey thinking. In addition to potentially boosting recruiting in Canada (which in the past BC has only done minimally), it could result kids staying longer than they otherwise would. I know of one example this year in which a BC underclassman who was considering leaving was told by his pro team to stay.

Great point.

The development of Kreider from when he stepped on campus three years is extremely impressive. He always had the skill but he was extremely raw and not great in his own end. For him in 2.5 years to be on the ice protecting a 1 goal lead in a game 7 with a minute to go after being a pro for a week especially for a coach like Torts is all you need to know.

I stil will never understand why Kovy or Ovie play the point on the PP. especially Ovie. Yeah he has a great shot and shit but his spot is the area around the faceoff dot on his left side. He is beyond lethal from there. Instead he turns into Chara, bombing shots from the point. Just stupid.

Thanks for that, Kreider was also on the back page of the Daily News yesterday. He's gotten a ton of pub from the Boomer & Carton show. Boomer has been talking about Kreider all season and was screaming at the time not to trade him for Nash. It only took him a couple of minutes this morning to talk about BC and York's program, the culture, York's system, etc -he's usually up for about 10 games per year.

Because he can't be trusted with a lead. Same thing happened against the B's. Played like 2.5 minutes during one third period.

The Rangers really slept walked through stretches of that game.

They had a great first half(ish) of the first period, just physically dominating the Caps but it all changes on the Bickel turnover. Nice to see the powerplay come through in a clutch situation.

As for Ovi, they might as well trade him (I'm sure they won't do it and his value is depressed). There's no point in paying him all that money to be a 4th line powerplay specialist. Granted throughout the season he isn't going to play 82 games against Chara/Sidenberg and McDonaugh/Girardi but what 13 minutes, 5 of which were on the powerplay? In game 7 wasn't he 10th(ish) in minutes?

It's all well and good they want to play this defensive style but it's absolutely hilarious to see Ovi, Semin, and Green/Wideman have a shift where the puck is pinned 180 feet from Lundqvist.

Lundqvist was awful last night. The 2nd was flat-out embarrassing and the 3rd goal was dog shit-soft. With that said, I'm not losing much sleep over it. The future Vezina winner played a horrendous game and the Rangers slept walked through 50 minutes, replete with collosal unforced errors and they still should have won. I suspect that the Rangers will play a complete game tomorrow and win a relatively easy one.

The West is facinating to watch. St. Louis' implosion is spectacular and Smashville looks defensively inept. I like LA. Despite the seeding, they are clearly the best team remaining on that side of the draw.

There's a good case for both though I imagine Lundqvist will win it this year because "he's due", similar to how Bergeron will probably win the Selke.

Though I would love to hear how Lundqvist got the Hart nod over Quick. If you were going to vote for a goalie there is no way in hell Lundqvist is more valuable to his team than Quick.
