He didn't because he doesn't know what Hockey East is or that BC is a member of it

Quick little blurb in an interview with Yukon's AD

This upgrade to Hockey East is going to happen, isn't it?

"That's the hope," Manuel said, "that we will have the invitation. Hopefully, it will happen sooner than later."

This month?

"Hopefully," he said. "People have said to me that you guys would help fill a void that has been here since the Whalers left [in 1997]. No slight to the Whale or anything of that nature. But bringing a high level of college hockey to Storrs and Hartford is going to be unbelievable if it happens."

"I was once the administrator for hockey under Red Berenson. I would give him a lot of credit for my love, understanding and commitment to the sport."

Friday and Saturday night games, especially later in the season, usually sell out (~8k). Sunday afternoon and weeknight games have considerably smaller crowds. The average attendance last year was 7,549, which includes--and is skewed by--the game at Fenway. The year before, the average attendance was 6,292. Those numbers are actual attendees, not tickets sold, I believe.

Correct, I'd say if you take out an odd ball middle of the week crap game BC is about 6500 and it is asses in the seats not tickets sold

So it's a done deal, meh

Here is a chart for Hockey East Attendance for all teams. They have separated out BC's Fenway game, which makes the home attendance much more similar to the prior year's:

I still am not convinced this is a good move. The best conference in the country doesn't do shit like this.

Don't disagree at all but 11 necessitated 12

Several problems I see that haven't been addressed:
1) Where they're playing. On campus rink sucks, downtown is way too big, apparently Gampel can't fit a rink -also I question the motivation of the students to go downtown on a Friday & Saturday night.
2) So they either need to upgrade on campus or build something, where's that $$ coming from. State of CT isn't in great shape financially, they're donors have been tapped for other projects
3) Hockey is the 3rd most popular winter sport on campus for them. At few other schools in HE (BC, UMass & PC) is it even 2nd of all sports.

We shall see.

I actually disagree that 11 necessitated 12...or at the very least that the decision needed to be done quickly.

I'm of the mindframe that this would not have gone down without concrete evidence of a committment to build a hockey arena and some proof that the money was there or was as good as there. While the potential is definitely on the plus side, I have major concerns about hockey really grabbing a foothold in a fanbase, big though it may be, that is already stretched pretty thin. I also don't see a ton of nags hoops fans being interested in a losing men's hockey program.

I think the big thing is that they need a consistent winner so they can build and, more importantly, solidify a core fan base. They certainly have the potential to get talent given all the high-end prep schools in the area but it's going to take some time and success to be able to recruit those players.

History clearly shows that they'd clearly have a much better chance of beating UNH if they were in first in HE.

I'm just waiting until the first time they beat us (we'll be playing them 2-5 times a year and many of those games will be played during our annual January slump, it'll happen sooner or later) and they're still coming on our message boards to crow about it the following July....after we win the national championship.

Here's the playoff format when there are 11 and later 12 teams

http://themackreport.com/hockey-east-to-expand-playoff-format-to-12-teams-starting-with-2013-14-season/

Starting with the 2013-14 season when Notre Dame joins the conference, all 11 teams will qualify. The top five teams will receive first-round byes with the remaining six playing on the extra weekend to determine the final three opponents for the four quarterfinal series. When Connecticut joins in 2014-15, all 12 teams will qualify, with the top four teams receiving first-round byes and the bottom eight playing for entry into the quarterfinals.

Under the new format, teams seeded fifth through eighth in the regular season will host the first-round (once Connecticut becomes the 12th team in 2014-15). The added first-round games will either be a single-elimination or a best-of-3 series, a detail that has yet to be determined.

Hate it

It's a pure money grab and completely devalues the RS
