Opening Statement:
“Similar to last week, I want to congratulate the four [advancing] coaches. It’s hard to
make the playoffs. Winning is difficult. To advance [to TD Garden] becomes that much
more difficult. We’re down to four teams. When you look at the weekend results, even
though our series with UMass did not go into Sunday, it could very easily have. The
other three series all went into Sunday. You could make a case for the quarters being the
most difficult of these next three tournaments in some respects. The teams are so familiar
with each other. So much builds up during the course of the season. They’re great
tournaments because they’re all the same now [single elimination]. We’re playing for the
Lamoriello Trophy – you win Friday and you advance and play Saturday. The [NCAA]
regionals are coming up afterwards. You win Thursday or Friday and you play Saturday.
The Frozen Four is the exact same. We have three mini-tournaments that all resemble
each other. You win it and you advance. UMass pushed us right to the limit. Parker Milner was the difference in the series. He continues to play very strong for us. His goals against average and his save percentage are a reflection of how well he is playing. Some of the saves he made were absolutely outstanding. He was the key player in the series.
As we look forward, we have Providence who is under new coach Nate Leaman. It’s
certainly a great credit to his program and his coaching staff that they could go into
Lowell and knock off the second-seeded team in our division. They’re on fire, they’re
hot. We certainly have to be ready for a different Providence College team than what we
saw a few weeks ago. Tim Schaller is back and he has been one of the key guys in their
lineup. He did not play in our series. We’re excited about it. We’re looking forward to
it. It should be a very interesting final four.”
Thoughts on the four teams overall – three top seeds and Providence:
“Providence is the one that caught fire at the right time. All four schools have done very
well and there’s a reason they’re here. Similar to our counterparts in basketball, the team
that plays the best on that particular night moves on. You can’t say ‘we’ve got 25 wins
and we should be moving.’ It’s who plays well on this particular night. I think we will
draw very well. Historically [having] BC and BU this close to the Garden, will bring big
crowds. Maine will have a huge contingent coming down from the state. I think
Providence, not being in the tournament for awhile, will spark a lot of interest from their
school and Rhode Island. So, I think it’s going to be a well-run and well-attended
tournament.”
On being outshot in three of the last four games:
“It’s always nice to outshoot an opponent and win a game. But I also think we are fooled
so often with statistics. It’s like first downs in football. Turnovers are big factors in all
sports. Faceoffs are a big factor. It goes a little deeper than shots. But when Parker
[Milner] was called upon, he had to make some saves – I did not like some of the saves
he was forced to make. There were breakaways and two-on-ones. But other teams have
offense and are going to generate offense against us. When you look at New Hampshire,
[BU goaltender Kieran] Millan has 68 saves and you would think New Hampshire was
moving on, but it’s not the way it works in our sport. It’s a crazy sport.”
On motivating and preparing for Providence, a team you played and beat twice
recently:
“When you look at recent results, how Providence went to UMass-Lowell and advanced,
that’s a wake-up call for our club. We know how good Lowell is and for the Friars to go
there and advance to the Garden, that has certainly got our attention. It’s similar to
UMass. During the course of the year, UMass had taken two-out-of-three from us, so
they had our attention because of that fact. The ability to go up to beat that Lowell team
has impressed me and has impressed the players.”
After a couple close games with UMass, does it help sharpen the team’s focus going
into Friday night’s game?
“The ability to win a close game is certainly something that tests you and also makes you
a better club. I’m not saying that a 3-0 or a 4-0 game are more enjoyable to coach. But
if you’re going to advance, against good competition like the Minutemen gave us, it gives
us even more confidence.”
On the year defenseman Brian Dumoulin is having:
“He’s had an outstanding year. He’s had a tremendous career here at BC. This is his
third year with us. There has been improvement in all facets of his game. Clearly he is
one of the top defensemen in our league and if you’re in that category, you’re one of the
best in the nation. He certainly has an effect on the game, whether it defensively –
making a stop or breaking the puck out of the zone – or on offense. He’s got some big
goals for us recently. He’s really been a key guy for us down the stretch.”
