BU's top recruit, Sam Kurker who is projected to be a 1st rounder and was ranked #30 by central scouting in North America has decommitted.

He wants to come this year but BU has no scholarship money and wants him in 2013.

Why would a 26 year old be living right next to college frats?

This could be true, or Kurker may be looking for a reason to bail out..it will be interesting to see if others find a reason to stay away from Kenmore Community.

I lived in that neighborhood for almost 2 years (the first 9 months of which were literally right around the corner from that address, the rest was about 2 blocks away)....it's kind of an unusual neighborhood, even by Allston standards. Probably 50% BU undergrads but the rest is a mix of recent college grads, 20/30-something hippies, and illegal immigrants of various nationalities (mainly Brazilian and indeterminate Asian).

BU has had Kurker slated for 2013 since he committed, but a 1st round draft pick is a game changer. When Kreider was in the same situation, BC was able to shift gears and bring him in a year earlier than planned; BU appears to be less adept or less lucky (or Kurker could simply be bailing out). While we're all feeling warm and fuzzy with schadenfreude over BU's latest headache, it's not inappropriate to ask whether we can possibly take advantage of it. I realize it would be a real rabbit-from-the-hat deal to come up with a scholarship slot for Kurker (especially with the possibility of Colin Sullivan committing), and I have no idea whether either Kurker or Jerry York would even be interested in the possibility, but it's definitely something to wonder about.

Heisenberg (who does a great job tracking everything) officially has Kurker as a decommit

Here's the link that's always good to have on the board regardless: https://spreadsheets0.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en&key=0AoPLTHefMmmTdGloMlVHTFFGNldvRHR3aG9naW82cEE&hl=en&gid=2

Boston University student faces New Zealand court over van crash that killed Brooklyn native, two other classmates

AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- A Boston University student appeared in a New Zealand court Friday on charges of careless driving over a car crash last weekend that claimed the life of three classmates and left another woman in critical condition.

Stephen Houseman, 20, has been charged with careless driving causing the deaths of Nicholas Jauberty, Daniela Lekhno and Austin Brashears, The New Zealand Herald reported.

He was also charged with four counts of careless driving causing injury. Kathy Moldawer, Alys McAlphine, Emily Melton and Margaret Theriault were all injured in the crash.

Houseman appeared in the Auckland District Court on Friday afternoon and was remanded without plea until his next court appearance in June. One of his arms was in a sling.

He was driving a white van carrying a group of students when it crashed Saturday on a rural highway on New Zealand's North Island.

With the exception of Theriault, the group had all been on an exchange program to Auckland University and Auckland University of Technology.

They were in a convoy of two vans en route to walk the Tongariro Crossing when the crash occurred.

Authorities said the van, with eight people on board, drifted off the road onto gravel before an over-correction forced it to roll at least three times, throwing two of the deceased from the vehicle.

The parents of Theriault, who is still in critical condition in the hospital, have offered their sympathy to Houseman's family, the Herald reported.

"We feel their pain and he now has a journey of recovery much like our daughter does," Todd and Deb Theriault said in a statement. "We understand there needs to be a court process and we support it.

"But that could have been any one of our kids at the wheel. This was an accident -- all our kids were pursuing their dream. Nobody was intentionally doing anything that would harm anyone."

Theriault, 21, remains in critical condition but was breathing on her own for the first time since she was put in a medically induced coma after receiving life threatening head injuries in the crash, hospital officials said Friday.

Adam Clendenning just signed with Chicago after 2 years, I thought he was overrated but still a very large loss for our friends down the road.

Always something with that kid, happy york told him to pound sand a couple of years ago he wasn't worth it

With another schollie opened up, I would imagine BU would be looking for another defenseman to replace Adam Clendening. It's hard to find someone to just step in as a freshman on D. AC would have been an experienced junior and that is one player BU will sorely missed with his offensive skills at the point.

Nicastro's charges being dropped, is a relief for him but questions remain on his character. He should never put himself in that position but life will move on for him and for BU hockey. I would never wish anything bad like that for anyone, even if it's a BU player. Let it be a lesson in life and hopefully he learns from his mistakes. Certainly, BC has its share of problems in the past but luckily, we have JY to minimize that sort of thing in the BC hockey program.

This could belong in the NCAA vs. MJ thread but the internet has been buzzing for a couple of days that Patrick Roy at the Quebec Remparts is going to push to sign a couple of BU's commits including some 2012s (they have the rights to 2 BU 12s & 2 13s).

As much as I hate the school down the street, not good for college hockey.

One really could wish that all the MJ people would go drown themselves in the St. Lawrence River. BU is the accursed traditional enemy, but the Canadian Major Juniors are like the Dark Side of the Force for all of NCAA hockey. The presence of the NHL by itself (paralleling the NBA) could be managed, but the MJs make the college-pro entanglement a constant pain in the butt. Of course, nothing can be done about the MJs, but I couldn't pass on the opportunity to vent about them.

Justin Courtnall (39 games, 4-3-7) is foregoing his SR season and signed with the Bruins today.

Odd considering:
A) He isn't exactly much of a pro prospect
2) The NHL is in a lockout
iii) Move in is this week

The AHL, or ECHL judging by his line, isn't in a lockout so he'll get paid regardless.

And still 15 or so days until the actual lockout begins. Which it will.

I'm kind of disappointed that Parker wasn't able to comment on this to the Globe. I'm sure it would've been as enlightened as his views usually are. Most likely, someone with half a brain at BU's press dept. finally realized they should keep him from talking about this.
