Dirt Worshippers and Gas Huffers are the two leading candidates for replacement names.

I thought the donation of the $$$ that paid for their beautiful arena was contingent on their not changing the name of their team. Isn't their biggest booster very hard-core? WTF?

They should change it to "The Seminoles".

Ahh. I'm no law-speaking fellow, but as I understand, it can be difficult to uphold such contingencies once donor dies.

Not even going to bother removing the 3000 logos. Surprised to see that the arena is privately run (but on university property?).

I think "the Firewater" would be a great name for a team. One of those cool names with no "s", like the Jazz or the Crimson Tide.

This reminds me of the old thing about naming the D-1 basketball teams whose nicknames don't end in "s".

I might still be drunk.

Could go with the "trailblazers", trail of tears reference.

I don't know though, they probably have reservations.

I hate when tradition clashes with PC America. I’m curious to find out what the new nickname will be, but to me it doesn’t matter because either way they’ll get their asses handed to them when we play them….just like Miami of Oxford Redskins ^ I mean RedHawks

Don't forget the "Red Storm" of St John's.

To take this too seriously, I agree with wanting certain names and/or traditions to go (e.g. using "Redskins" is akin to naming a team the N*****s), but people get way too riled up over small things. Fighting Sioux doesn't seem remotely offensive to me.

I agree, it can be offensive to some people, but tradition has to come into play as well. The perfect example is South Bend Community College and their Fighting Irish.....do you think they will change that if Irish groups are offended ?

Fighting Irish is no more/less offensive than Fighting Sioux. People just have thinner skin when they're constantly shit on. why do you think AC's so sensitive?

I agree and that’s the majority of the problem our overall culture has changed, for the better I might add. I can see how certain nicknames can be offensive to different groups…hell the “Guidos” on Jersey Shore piss me off as an Italian because all of my friends make fun of other Italian like that (you can see them at any North End Feast). I think the change overall cultural change in the country has happened much like other changes…a little too quickly. As a result overall I feel we’re somewhat too overly sensitive and too PC

I don't think it really matters why they were named that, unless there was a local tribal chieftain named Joe Redskin who they were honoring. And I think N*****s is overstating it...it's more like "Darkies" or something. Whether it was originally intended as an insult doesn't matter much.

"Until 1994, the St. John's mascot was the Redmen, which referenced the red uniforms worn by the university in competition."

Primary colors have rights too, dammit!

Seems pretty hard core.

Hitler birthday party

On April 20 in 1986 and 1988, he hosted parties to celebrate Adolf Hitler's birthday[1] at his casino in Las Vegas which featured bartenders in T-shirts reading "Adolf Hitler — European tour 1939-45". Because of this, in 1989, the Nevada Gaming Commission fined Engelstad $1.5 million "for actions that damaged the reputation and image of Nevada's gaming industry." Engelstad apologized publicly for the parties, but the row was not to be his last controversial move.[2]

Actually it does because a word without intention is just a formation of letters. If you don't take context and intention into account, you're just being a sensitive boob.

Sounds like a real card. Still his money, his rules. I would love to see the heirs say beat it to the team for bowing to the NCAA. Way to go NCAA you just cost a university millions.
