If you're illustrating that having good denfesemen is better than not having good defensemen, you'll obviously find no disagreement from me. What I was getting is that $100 mil and 4 first round draft picks is a very steep price to pay for Weber, despite that he is obviously one of the best d-men in the league. This is especially the case when the team he is playing for has had a rotating cast of clowns in net (including a current one who is compensated handsomely for little to nothing) who go through stretches of struggling to stop even the easiest of shots with any consistency. This is not to discount that Ilya has them by the balls. He does. However, if I were Holmgren, I would be throwing a crazy amount of resources (draft picks, $$ for coaches throughout the system, time, etc) at young goalies to try to end this increasingly long-standing Achilles Heal. Moreso than the $$, forfeiting the four first round draft picks would hamper this effort.

The team is very, very, very young. Giroux (24), Couterier (19), B. Schenn (20), Voracek (22) and Simmonds (24) are the core of our offense going forward (throw in Read (25), Wellwood (22), Rinaldo (22) as contributors). The only other offensive guys who contribute are Briere (an old 35), Hartnell (30), Talbot (28). The Defense is also pretty young Weber if he signs is 27, Coburn (27), Grossmann (27), Meszaros (27), Schenn (22) and Timonen (38). Bryz is tied up for a decade, so there will not be a change at goalie.

What I think this means, in addition to Flyers draft picks always being pretty far back except the year they picked JVR, is that 1st round picks are not worth as much to the Flyers as other teams.

I wonder how different Bryz with 26+ minutes of Weber paired primarily with Timonen or Meszaros, backed primarily by Coburn and Grossmann, is than Bryz with a first pairing of Coburn/Grossmann or Coburn/Carle.

I doubt Tim Thomas has a single Vezina w/o Chara and Weber is better (maybe) or equal to Chara.

Some of the stat geek/cba afficianados take the fun out of being a fan. Also, they are generally wrong a lot.

I agree with the stat geek stuff just because hockey is such a fluid game you can't capture everything neatly in a few numbers. Which is unlike baseball in which every event of every play is pretty much documented. In terms of the CBA stuff, I've just kinda picked it up through osmosis and wanting to gain a better understanding of what is happening and why things are happening, such as the 35+ contracts, buyouts, LTIR and basically other cap related issues. I believe that process all started with either the Thomas 35+ contract or the Glen Murray buyout.

To answer your question eagle9903, there are both hockey nerds and hockey brutish types in Boston, just as there are in Philly. There are probably a lot more of both here than there are there, because Bruins territory is a lot more geographically expansive than Flyers territory (it goes north all the way to Canada and the Martime provinces and stuff). What we also have a lot of--as I'm sure the Canadian teams do as well--are the hockey-coach types who are probably somewhere in between the aforementioned categories. These are the types who sit quietly in their seats during play then analyze play with their buddies often in great detail during breaks in play. Some are tremendously knowledgeable, and others think the fact that they coached their kid's mite team in and of itself gives them expertise. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced here because people from Boston and surroundings self-indulgently think they make good hockey coaches as a rule on the basis that there have been a lot of good hockey coaches from Boston (any of the hockey coach types would cite guys like Laviolette, Torts, Joe Sacco, Brian Burke, Scott Gordon, Jack Capuano, Jerry, Parker, Bill Hanson, Ken Martin, and probably some others as evidence of this fact).

Yes. But Claver's post is confusing. Bousequet is talking about Weber, not Suter, although he is both of their agents. I take this as Weber saying through his agent, that while he doesn't want to be in nashville (mainly because they let sutter walk) he is not just going for the biggest paycheck, he is also going to a place he doesn't hate as much as new york. I think it is deflecting. Maybe I am misreading it.

If this is the deal, it's not a whole lot that they're giving up (Nash's contract nonwithstanding). Erixon is a decent prospect, but as far as I know, he isn't a truly elite prospect. The first rounder will probably not yield a top 20 pick, either.
