It's truly sad watching the Big East referees suffer in the wake of the St. John's win over Rutgers. Obviously most of the public has never taken a course in economics.
The refs did their job. How would the Big East have benefited if Rutgers had won? The Scarlet Knights would have been 16-16, and would have needed a special exception to get a NIT bid at 16-17 after their next loss.
Meanwhile, the Committee would have wondered what in the world was going on with St. John's if they couldn't beat Rutgers on their home court. Might have resulted in SJ dropping a seed or two. More importantly, it would have reduced the cachet other Big East teams enjoyed from victories over SJ.
The Big East refs had one option, and that was to ignore fouls SJ committed, ignore the SJ travel, ignore the SJ ball getting thrown into the stands, and to run off the court before replay could be discussed. I expect them to be handsomely rewarded for their dedication to the cause.
