Coach Donahue's Opportunity

Postby Dirtywater on Mon Jun 07, 2010 8:33 am

A couple of interesting $$ stats from other sites:

"This isn't a precise comparison, but these numbers from the Department of Education give us a glimpse into how profitable each of the ACC men's basketball programs were in 2009-2010....

Some schools even make their programs look worse. Duke University, a top seed in this year's NCAA men's basketball tournament, reported the largest loss of any men's basketball program last year after years of annual profits in the $4 million to $5 million range. The school said that was due to a shift in revenue to the non-sport specific classification.

North Carolina was the conference's most profitable basketball outfit, pulling in more than $12 million last year. Here is a look at the ACC:

1. North Carolina - $12,364,115
2. N.C. State - $7,166,869
3. Maryland - $5,902,659
4. Georgia Tech - $5,334,856
5. Wake Forest - $4,573,700
6. Virginia Tech - $3,940,022
7. Clemson - $3,433,424
8. Miami - $1,929,507
9. Florida State - $1,407,281
10. Virginia - $1,131,216
11. Boston College - $0
12. Duke - (2,031,850)

BC netted out, reporting revenues and expenses that totaled $5,688,912. UNC led the conference in revenues, bringing in almost $20 million, followed by Duke (~$12 mil) and N.C. State (~$11 mil). Based on the non-GAAP approved accounting anomaly noted above, Duke was the biggest spender with over $13 million in expenses related to their basketball program. UNC comes in a distant second having spent almost $7.5 million.

The amount of money a program brings in is somewhat proportion to the size of their home arena. The Dean Dome is the largest arena in the conference, seating 21,750. N.C. State's RBC Center (19,722) and Maryland's Comcast Center (17,950) run 2-3 in the conference in terms of capacity. Those three programs also run 1-3 in profitability. More seats, more cash."

"ACC Schools 2008-2009 revenue.................................................................

School.........................Football Revenue...............Total Athletic Department Revenue

Florida State......................$24,877,536.................................$74,417,324

I used to look at those numbers a few years ago and you could never use BC's except for maybe total revenue. Bball and Fball always evened out. Its so easy to finagle the numbers. You just need to move general donations to specific sports or expenses such as a training area everyone uses to one sport.

Also, looking at how the ADept makes more then UM, MD, VT, a lot of that is donations and I wonder how much profit the hockey team has shown the last few years.

:duchE was getting at it, but these numbers don't tell the whole story at all. If anyone thinks that the BC program is more profitable than the Duke program, they're crazy. When you factor indirect revenue (donations and merchandise), it would tell a different story.

Merchandise is a killer for teams like that. Hopefully hooking on with Under Armor brings some decent gear into the fold.

I really hope so, when I saw the list last week and we were in the 50's only above a lot of crappy schools I was disappointed althought not suprised. Hopefully UA helps but I cant see by how much unless we are in their advertising campaigns. I would think we would have been at least on par with UVA not behind them.

Texas is like the NY Yankees. Tons of money from tm licensing, tv and big venues sold out in FB, BB and Baseball - plus great teams in all. The numbers for BC are surprisingly good in spite of smallish venues and, other than hockey, no championships. Further proof as to the huge positive impact from joining the ACC. And it can only get better if we see some major improvement in hoops, football and our overall sports marketing. Another private school we should emulate is USC. If you have any familiarity with their overall program (esp on marketing side and alumni relations) you come away extremely impressed with their professionalism and organization.
