Re: Steve Donahue's Record of Performance

From this morning's Herald:

Steve Donahue didn’t put any stock in past statistics. Instead, when he became coach at Boston College last April, Donahue looked at the shooting strokes of his returning players.

He liked what he saw enough to have confidence they could run his offense, which results in a high amount of 3-point attempts. After 12 games, Donahue’s faith has been rewarded.

The 10-2 Eagles are making 38.9 percent of their treys after connecting on just 32.6 percent last season. They made 5.1 3-pointers per game last season, which ranked 267th in the nation. They’re averaging 9.1 treys per game this season, which puts them in the top 20.

“When I first came here I tried to analyze really if they’re good shooters or not,” Donahue said. “Even my bad teams at Cornell, I’ve always recruited shooters. I just thought Biko (Paris), in particular, was a very good 3-point shooter. I thought Corey Raji had a great stroke.”

Donahue’s Cornell squad led the nation in 3-point percentage last season, but the coach doesn’t have any secret shooting tricks. If the players run his offense correctly they will get easier looks, but knocking them down is the result of hard work.

When Donahue took over, he simply gave some pointers on form and told the players to take 100 3-pointers every day of the summer. The players texted Donahue with their results, and Paris’ totals consistently stood out.

Paris, a senior guard, had 36 treys in his first three seasons. He already has hit 29 this season and is third on the team in scoring (11.7 points per game).

“I’m just shooting with confidence,” Paris said. “Like coach Donahue tells me, if I’m open, shoot it. That’s what I do. We’re a good 3-point shooting team now, and I think we all understand as a unit that’s what we do now.”

Raji still does most of his work on the offensive glass, but he’s added an outside shot to his arsenal. He’s knocked down eight 3’s this season after making only 10 in his first three years.

The biggest improvement, however, has been made by Reggie Jackson.

The talented junior guard shot just 28.4 percent on 3’s in his first two seasons. This one, he’s shooting 50.9 percent.

Jackson’s development isn’t limited to the shots he’s making. His ability to break down defenses is crucial to making Donahue’s offense work. With Jackson’s penetration drawing attention, teammates have had open looks.

“When Reggie drives to the basket, they’re going to collapse on him,” Paris said. “They have to. If not, he’s going to lay the ball up or dunk the ball. Teams are going to continue to collapse on him, and he’s done a wonderful job finding us.”

Coachin' em up....instilling confidence...attending practice....

You wonder in the past --even in good seasons---- if Al was just a caretaker with Coen and Cooley doing the heavy lifting?

The last 3 years Lazy Elvis ---- he was MIA...but did lead the BC Rec Plex in scoring and is now the career leader in both points and rebounds.

MIA and now See you later.
FALL 2011 WILL BE THE BEST EVER FOR BC SPORTS AT THE HEIGHTS!

Rettigun leading our Football team to 14-0 and a Title!

The Hoops Freshman starting a new Legacy!
The Icemen returneth for another shot at Title 5!

GO EAGLES!

An Al Skinner Practice
Written by 25

-Skinner watches a BC practice scrimmage alongside his assistants, half-interested-

Skinner: *points at a player* And what's his name? Number 15? He looks like... he's pretty good at stuff.
DuQuette: Yeah... that's Rakim Sanders. *yells out to the players instructions for the practice*
Skinner: Oh, wait. Wait. Duh! I knew he looked familiar. I shared a cheesesteak with him once! He was reluctant to do the sharing part. *begins playing with iPod*
DuQuette: Oh, by the way, I caught Cortney and Rakim smoking reefers in the parking garage. What do you want to do?
Skinner: --- Hmm?
DuQuette: What do you want to do about it?
Skinner: What should I do?
DuQuette: Uh. Suspended them?
Skinner: Suspend everybody!
Duquette: It was only Rakim and Cortney.
Skinner: Oh. Rakim has a girlfriend?
Duqette: No -- Cortney is number 55.
Skinner: He looks big. Will he be mad if we suspend him?
Duquette: Possibly?
Skinner: Shit. This is a hard job. How are Bill and Ed doing on the trail? Finding any sleepers?
Duquette: They... They don't work here... anymore. They haven't for... a few years.
Skinner: *changes game on iPod from solitaire to zuma* So who's recruiting?

It's hard to write like Shakespeare from a laptop. Anyways, it's quite amazing how some believe this is actually how practice went.
I like BC basketball.

I think we all would have taken this at the beginning of the year. this team had their chances but the Don showed me more than Al did in recent years, by far. I don't care if reggie comes back. The team would blow but groom daniels, lonnie, anderson, caudill, and clifford to become a talented team in the near future. GDF needs to give him time
