Maybe I have too much faith in Gene, but I'm going with Pearl.
You don't do this without making a splash with your hire. I like Coen, but he doesn't get it done from a PR perspective. Why fire and pay off Skinner to bring in one of his former assistants? You can't sell that at all.

You are thinking too logically. Our AD is GDF. He doesn't want to win or create a PR buzz with a top coach. He instead wants to control a low-paying no-name coach who will keep the seats empty, who might make the tournament every few years

I share your optimism. Say what you want, but GDF is not so stupid to take this action without awareness of the bad press that he'd receive. To compound it by not making a hiring splash would be inexcusable.
