If you could have any coach...

Postby ATLeagle on Fri Mar 26, 2010 1:55 pm

Say that money, prestige, GDF, the weather, whatever is not an issue. Who would you want to see BC hire to replace Al.

I think my first choice would be Ben Howland.

John Wooden....assuming I could have the John Wooden of 40 years ago. If money, prestige and GDF don't matter why should the inability to travel through time.

Agreed- these all would be great choices. I don't like how Wright pays players but I think he's a great coach- and he's probably the only person in the country other than Pitino would could keep up with Al in terms of level of fashion.

Of course I would bring Nolan along to teach the 40 minutes of hell since Knight is not a second fiddle.

Gary Williams would have to be on my list.

Frank Haith, Paul Hewitt, Seth Greenberg, Lenoard Hamilton & Oliver Purnell should certainly be in the discussion

Knight may have an interest despite what BC would be willing to pay as he wants to coach again and is wealthy and may not insist on a huge salary. He is one of the best tactical coaches ever, is an excellent recruiter and graduates his players. However, some on our board may not want to risk such a hire due to his past inability to control his temper. Of course, he is also older and who knows how long he would coach before he either loses his edge or just retires.

Considering all that, it would be a major surprise if BC went after him.

I like where your head's at, but we're not hiring Bobby Knight. I'd be thrilled, but it ain't happening.

I agree. We would receive more national attention for hiring Bobby than the Health Care Law is not getting. It would be a Bob Cousy type hire. You may recall that Cousy and his team caption (help me here Campion) were on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

I think the captain of the team with Cousy was Ed Hockenbury or something close to that name.

Surprised no Coach K. He wins, his guys graduate, and his moral standing dwarfs the majority of his competitive peer group. Hate him when he is not yours, but you'd love him if he was on your side.

I'm not afraid to admit it - John Calipari. Great coach. His style of defense is just unbelievable. Sure, he is a bit of a sleazeball, but BC could reign him in a bit.

1. John Calipari
2. Bruce Pearl
3. Tom Izzo
4. Coach K
5. Billy Donovan
6. Rick Pitino
7. Jay Wright
8. Thad Motta
9. Cornell Coach
10. Bonzi Colson

We missed out on the ideal coach for us last year: Sean Miller. He was a realistic get and would have been an absolutely great fit.

I would definitely hire Izzo if there were no restrictions. Then probably Pearl. Knight has struggled in the postseason starting even towards the end in Indiana.

On the more realistic level, I'd be fine with Cornell coach or McCaffrey.

100% true... except for the fact that GDF won't be paying the next coach one penny over $750k in total comp.
