NCAA pick'em group

Postby cvilleagle on Mon Mar 15, 2010 1:13 pm

I thought it would be fun to have an EO pick'em group on yahoo, just for bragging rights. Not as much fun when we're not in, but here's the information:

League ID# 114038

I may install some local scripts to host a tournament as well. I'll see what type of magic I can pull off when I get home.

I will probably have some sort of a prize as well.

Let's not have some ghey scoring where correctly picking a 16 over 1 is worth the same as 1 over 16.

I'm going out on a limb and predicting this will be the best first round ever. The cream will eventually rise to the top, but there's upset specials all over the bracket.

Well, as the commissioner I can mess with the scoring some.

First, the basics:

Correct picks
Round Points - Default Points - Progressive Points - Straight
1 1 1 1
2 2 2 1
3 4 3 1
4 8 4 1
5 16 5 1
6 32 6 1

These numbers can be tweaked, of course.

Then there are bonus points - the settings can be tweaked to do bonuses three ways:

1. No bonuses.
2. You get a set number of points for each "upset" that you pick each round. If the lower seed wins, it's an upset, even if it's a 9 seed over an 8. This can be staggered based on round - for instance, round 1 upsets can be worth 1, round 2 upsets can be worth 2, etc.
3. You get a bonus based on the seed differential - for instance - a 16 beating a 1 gets you 15 points, (or 30, or 45, since you can make it 2x, 3x, etc.)

Any suggestions for a good scoring system? It seems to me that bonuses for upsets should be based on seed differential, but I don't want them to be so strong that this thing's over after round one because someone picked a 15-2.

Everybody is up Kansas' ass. That's why I picked K-State to lose to Kentucky in the title game. I think I had UTEP as the highest seeded team (at 12) to make the Elite Eight.
I like BC basketball.

With all the regulars "out" this year (no UCLA, no UNC, no Arizona), you might be right.

For my scoring we do:

1st round win: 1*Seed
2nd round win: 2*Seed
Sweet 16 win: 6*Seed
Elite 8 win: 12*Seed
Final 4 Win: 24*seed
Champ: 36*seed

The problem with this tourney for me is that I haven't seen many top seeds play like New Mexico, Baylor, etc..

This is why you need a dish for those tues/wed late night clashes between BYU vs Utah on the Mountain West Network. :ugeek:

OK - preliminarily I have the settings as follows, given yahoo's limited variations on scoring systems:

Correct picks:

Round 1: 1 point
Round 2: 2 points
Round 3: 4 points
Round 4: 8 points
Round 5: 16 points
Round 6: 32 points

Bonuses:
Round 1: 1x
Round 2: 2x
Round 3: 4x
Round 4: 6x
Round 5: 10x
Round 6: 12x

based on seed differential - for example, if you pick a round 1 15 over 2 upset, you are getting 1 point for the correct pick plus 13 for the upset for a total of 14 points.

If you pick round 5 4 over 1, you are getting 16 points for the correct pick, plus 30 points (10x seed differential.)

This seems to give some weight to upsets without putting the bonuses so high that you should just pick all upsets and hope for the best.

Feel free to tell me if this system sucks.

I like it. Makes you want to take "chances" with the underdogs.
