Dave Paulsen is a very, very good Xs and Os coach from his days back in Bucknell. He is not, however, a top line recruiter. If he is in a Phil Martelli role... great. But, Grant is going to need some Spinelli-like bag men for the remaining 2 staffers.

He took over for Hewitt at Mason and did reasonably better, so I guess there is that.

I agree that they need an ace recruiter. I also think the plan is to hit the transfer portal hard the first few years. Lots of midmajors build great teams with transfers. I can't think of a power program that has pulled it off through multiple recruiting cycles.

I just don't envision any scenario for a quick turnaround here. Even if he's doing a good job, in year 4 they won't be challenging for a tournament birth and the school will be faced with the same decision whether or not to wait longer citing small improvements or try to upgrade. We'll all call for an upgrade, then they'll go out and hire a coach who best case scenario will take years to turn things around.

He’s really well connected in NE Prep I think. It doesn’t take much to be better than Paul Hewitt FYI.

A-10 freshman of the year went to Mason and is transferring.

If you haven't turned a basketball program around in four years, you never will.

I’m actually kinda here. Until they build a basketball facility and get this guy some actual support people are going to need to be patient. If BC had the facility and support I’d feel differently

I responded in the recruiting thread before seeing this. This description corresponds with his falling off the last couple of years at Bucknell (as recruiting dried up), and then never getting past T-4th in the A10 (not bringing in the horses).

Folks at Bucknell tell me that Paulsen recruited the prep schools well and Nathan Davis’ early success was due to Paulsen’s recruits. As they have graduated, he has struggled a bit. That said, I agree that recruiting at the ACC level is a different beast and Paulsen simply hasn’t had experience doing so. I hear nothing but great things about him (good guy, cares about the kids, players get better, no issues with players off the court/in classroom). But, just don’t think he’s the guy you bring in as your lead recruiter. Overall, it’s an impressive start to the staff.

At Bucknell, Paulsen recruited Nate Sestina and Mike Muscala, two NBA-level big men which is 2 more NBA-level big men than we've produced in the same time frame.

Probably his best player at GM was Otis Livingston who he recruited out of NJ. As others have mentioned, Tyler Kolek out fo RI was their best player this year as a frosh, and was the A-10's frosh of the year, and has entered the protocol. Seemed very Matt Milon-ish to me so not sure how that plays in the ACC, but have to think as we've reached out its possible if not likely he ends up here.

We'll see. Good rep.

Paulson is a good coach who has found some good talent in his time. I wouldnt want him as a lead recruiter but I think he’s a good option to help game plan, evaluate players, and run the practices. The real question is who gets hired to recruit/make better connections with prep leagues/AAU.

Masons leading scorer from last year (Jordan Milller, 6’6” wing) just entered portal. I expect we’ll be in on him.

Since we are going to need transfers in the first few years would you rather have mid major stars looking to prove themselves or P6 busts looking for playing time and redemption?

I'd prefer the better athletes at most positions. If you want to bring in a shooter or a distributer that doesn't belong in the ACC, fine. But very limited. BC isn't getting a transfer from that level that was overlooked, they're getting guys that actually belong on that level.

Sounds like Anthony Goins from Clemson is going to be the first one officially in. Played at Quinnipiac and coached in the NE Prep league + the Ivy League before going to Clemson. Looks like he’s recruited some pretty good players while there.

I'll ask the question on everyone's mind: Did he recruit Rich Kelly?

It seems that Marquette has Texas money. Imagine what they could do in the supposed-bankrupts BigEast with Loyola money.

This. I was told his financial package is actually a bit smaller that what Woj was getting and he received what amounts to a severance package from Texas. He was probably getting fired no matter what if he got knocked out in the first round, but losing to Abilene Christian made it impossible for him to stay at Texas.

Well... he certainly learned from the best. Have to figure Eddy made the moves as a gut-shot to Northeastern in order to clear the way for CoC's rise to the top of the CAA pack.

I haven't seen Paulsen or Goins announced officially, but I'd say that such a staff is pretty solid.

Markwood and Goins official now and listed on BCEagles. I’m fine with the staff so far. I think we’ll learn a lot in the first year how Grant and company are.
