I don't understand why "keeping the starters in the game" and "not running up the score" can't coexist.

If the game is truly out of reach, who's more likely to slow things down and keep the final score somewhat respectable? The people at the end of the bench who hardly ever get significant playing time and feel they've got something to prove?

No one said it wasnt. Its similarly as obvious when you have your starters in and arent trying to run up the score. Hence the benching of said starters for 3 walkons and 2 frosh.
