In situations like this, there is often a good reason why the guy has never moved up to a top spot. Some guys are just born to be #2.

The Amaker responses ("Amaker Dismisses Talk of BC Job") cited by BCI were by no means a "dismissal" or an indication he would not consider an offer after the tournament has run its course. Just "I'm going to focus on my team right now..., etc." At least that's how it sounds to me.

For the record, I think this time around (as opposed to football) were going to hire somebody that has been mentioned in this thread.

Some just make too much sense

We'll know around 6pm if it's Amaker.

I'm thinking Crean.

It's really nice knowing that we have the best job available this time around.

VT and USF are the only ones in the same universe as us on the job front. So it's good to know that if we pay reasonable we should be able to get whoever we want.

He is a Fordham guy. I am always surprised with the lack of success Fordham has had over the last 20 years that they have never even attempted to hire him. The guy has made an insane amount of money being a terrible NBA coach, I would think retiring into a job coaching his alma mater while living up in Toughchester would make the most sense for him. :ace

I read this article on Amaker this morning: http://www.sbnation.com/longform/2014/3/6/5474320/harvard-basketball-tommy-amaker-profile-ncaa-tournament-2014#comments

The following section stood out. [the bolding is mine.]

"By the end of his first season, Amaker had a much bigger problem. On Sunday, March 2, 2008, just after Harvard lost to Cornell in the Big Red's Ivy-clinching victory, Pete Thamel, then a reporter for The New York Times, published a story detailing allegations that Harvard had lowered its admissions standards for Amaker's highly-touted initial recruiting class. Thamel, who later wrote a separate piece about Amaker cutting several veteran players to make room for those recruits, also reported that Amaker and his staff had skirted recruiting rules. The most damning anecdote was that Blakeney had played pick-up basketball with two prospects, Keith Wright and Max Kenyi, during a no-contact period in summer 2007, just before Harvard hired him.

Looking back, Harvard Athletic Director Bob Scalise and Amaker downplay the negative coverage. "We wound up hiring a coach who was a lot more aggressive than some of the other coaches in the league were accustomed to in recruiting and just all over trying to get the best players here that we possible could," says Scalise, "and I think some of those folks didn't like that." (The New York Times article drew heavily on interviews with other Ivy League coaches.) Amaker suggests it made Harvard supporters more resolute. "There are so many people that were very much unnerved by what was trying to be done to us," he says, "that they wanted to support us even more.""

I still don't want Amaker, but thought Thamel's sourcing was interesting.

At this point can we really believe anything Pete Thamel writes?

Shaughnessy seems to think Amaker is a done deal.

http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2014/ ... story.html

Sorry, it just makes too much sense. The 48-year-old Amaker has done everything he can do in seven seasons in the Ivy League. He has hit the glass backboard ceiling. He is an ACC guy (Duke) and a man who can take BC back to the levels it reached under Bob Cousy, Dr. Tom Davis, and the much-maligned Al Skinner (Al must be smiling a lot these days). And he would not have to move his family.

I still think the top 3 candidates should be :
1) Derek Kellogg - but can't see him accepting
2) Archie Miller - Dayton
3) Tommy Amaker - I think the criticism of his days at Seton Hall/Michigan are dated. The guy is still young and recruits/HS coaches will know who he is. Big difference vs some of the people BC might mistakenly consider.

others - more outside of the box:
Dave Rose - BYU head coach
Dwayne Stephens - Mich State assistant (note - Izzo and Boeheim each had no collegiate head coaching experience when they got their current jobs)

I don't think anyone is concerned about Amaker's recruiting. It is widely accepted that he would be a very good recruiter for us.

They are the Purdue of the ACC. One decent coach and one great player in their entire history leading to an entitled and misguided fan base that doesn't realize they suck.

funny coincidence - that particular team came up and was like #2 in the country. it was when spaz got introduced to the sold out crowd at conte to a standing ovation.

good times.

Timmay and Randolph Childress maybe. CP3 was okay for the one year he was relevant.
