Coaching Candidates

Postby tallsy on Wed Feb 12, 2014 11:37 am

Obviously, the list starts with Pearl. But beyond him, who do you think would be a good fit. Just throwing a few names out there:

Tim Cluess - Iona
Greg Lansing - Indiana State
Keith Dambrot - Akron
Rick Stansbury
Ray Harper - WKU (?)
Tommy Amaker
I don't know assistants that well.

Additions? Deletions? Comments?

It doesn't matter, they'd all be an improvement. No one could be worse than Steve Donahue.

Who would go to a school that has had ridiculous amounts of turnover resulting the 3 coaches over a 25 year span???

Admins feel free to consolidate this with any of the other Coaching Candidate threads on the board:

Outside of the obvious and much desired Howland/Pearl options....Tim Cluess is an interesting, and very realistic option for consideration. Well known, connected and extremely well respected throughout metro NYC, big winner at every level he's coached at, known as a great teacher, high energy, high character guy (I know, I know we've heard this before). Limited national recruiting and no major D1 conference experience is definitely a negative - but he'd be an interesting guy to interview.
I think Amaker or Capel would be fine choices as well. Not perfect by any stretch, but I think we'd be happy with the relative success they had at Seton Hall, Michigan and Oklahoma respectively. I actually think Aamaker would be an excellent fit - not sure where the negativity towards him stems from.

I think a major portion of the hate for Amaker comes from his obvious failures at Michigan. While it's not a particularly strong argument for him, I feel most fans fail to recognize that struggling in your first shot at the big time can sometimes be a net positive in the long run as a coach learns what NOT to do.

As previously stated I am still in the Howland camp. I acknowledge that HJS was the first I saw to mention his name here or elsewhere. And since then I haven't seen anything to dissuade my opinion that he is an attainable big name for alma mater.

Yes, Howland is far and away the most appealing realistic candidate. Anyone else is going to have question marks, for sure.

Amaker is Paul Hewitt light. He cant coach at all. Unless you're going to hire Pearl or Howland I suppose, I'd prefer to just make Donahue hire a new staff and move forward.

If Nahue is here one more hour than the end of the season, moving forward is exactly what I am going to do. Move forward to root for a real college basketball program.

I think that if Bates had his choice, it would be Howland and it would be done very quickly (Dazoo and Howland supposedly share the same agent). That said, I've also heard something about BB liking Mike Hopkins.

However, I don't think he will have the leeway to call the shots on this. You will see a committee made up of marineagle and a few other Board members. Their focus will be on coaches that they are familiar with... specifically, Coen, O'Shea and Amaker (with the small possibility of Schmidt, Wojo and Mooney (depending on how much they were vetted the last time).

If the BOT Committee doesn't allow him to hire Howland, I think that Bates will push for Amaker (from the preapproved list) solely because of his ability to recruit.

While my first choice would Howland (followed by Pearl), I like Jeff Capel over a lot of the names routinely mentioned .

Actually, a search for Howland shows that you first referenced him in back in 2010 to replace Al.

So 1 of 2 coaches and if not hire new assistants and hope for the best? This is horrible even for you.

I am anti-Amaker but think he is probably the favorite given all the issues. There are a lots of names out there and I will start profiling some of them soon. Coen's poor season has sunk his chances. I think Hopkins and O'Shea are legit candidates. Howland is such a layup that if BC doesn't hire him, you know that we went cheap and that the BOT doesn't care about being great. Just being better than we currently are.

I'm not pro-Amaker in any way, but to say that there are only two options that are better than Nahue plus new nameless assistants who would somehow be better than who his first choices were is fucking luda in every way, shape and form.

I'm scared shitless that BC is going to hire Amaker. He's the worst case scenario hire - he'll graduate players and do enough on the court not to get fired, but he'll never give the fans anything to get excited about. It'll be a long run of 7th place finishes in the ACC, which may sound good now, but will get old quick.

I don't agree at all. I think he will bring in excellent talent and miserably undercoach it to a 7th place finish, but it will be fun to watch.
