I agree with ballgame in that Hanlan has a long way to go to get to where Rice was, and I don't know if he'll get there next year. Thus my point of saying I think the 2 best players on the team are kind of a wash.
I'll say this for the 09 scrubs (or at least Paris, Southern, and Dunn), they might have sucked on offense, but they could guard and they could bang. Our current scrubs suck on offense and are turnstiles on defense too.
And perhaps the biggest point to me: I would trade Rahon, Clifford, and Lonnie Jackson (yes, next year's versions) as the primary supporting cast for Sanders, Raji, and Reggie Jackson all day. There's a talent disparity there in favor of the 09 team, and if you don't think so, I'd be interested to hear why.
So when you look at the supporting cast, I just don't see there being enough talent (unless Owens is the second coming) to really get this team to the tourney next year.
I do not remember Southern and/or Dunn playing good defense or rebounding. They were big and looked more the part like what you would expect out of a quality BCS conference front court but Southern was very soft and Dunn was just awful. Paris was just a terrible point guard as a sophomore, I don't really remember whether he was a good defensive player.
I would not trade freshman Rahon for Sanders at any point in his career. I've said my piece on Clifford too many times already and if he's healthy based on being 7 feet tall and his frosh performance he's the biggest difference in all of this. I would certainly trade LJ for RJ though, including a freshman RJ but its because RJ was athletic and brought a dimension we don't have not because he was particularly productive that year.
As always, I am not saying this type of progress is what is going to happen, I'm saying I don't agree with the implication that the 2008-09 team (as the lowest talented recent BC tourney team) had all-acc 2nd and third teamers in all the supporting roles, which is really in essence the implication of "not an ACC player" as often used here and therefore this team cannot be a tournament team based on the lack of talent of the supporting players.
