Trying to be cautiously optimistic.

This really isn't a game to be nervous about. Playing a team that finished something like 9-21, and plays in the Sun Belt, AND lost all of it's starters from that team shouldn't come close to beating BC when BC is at home.

Richard Pitino will press the living hell out of the freshmen. I wouldn't be surprised if BC wins close.

The scope of my vision is not limited to one game. Regardless, every game is a game to be nervous about until they prove otherwise. I want to see something from the freshman.

Went to the sportsbook this morning to make my weekly parlay cards (lottery tickets) for the NFL games.

BC favored by 13.5 against FIU.

Almost put a 20 on it for fun but that would only insure a 0-1 start to the season for the Don.

Here's a preview of the game I wrote for BCI

This year, the Boston College men's basketball team is projected to improve. How much they improve remains the question. The season certainly wasn't helped with the departure of Jordan Daniels just before their opener vs. FIU on Sunday. Let's take a look at BC's opponent, FIU.

Coach: Richard Pitino (1st season)

Key Additions: Tymell Murphy (Junior College Transfer), Malik Smith (Junior College Transfer), Jerome Frink (Freshman)

Key Losses: Dejuan Wright (Graduated), Jeremy Allen (Graduated), Phil Murphy (Graduated), Dominique Ferguson (NBA Draft)

Projected Starting Lineup: Deric Hill (5'9, 160), Malik Smith (6'2, 170), Tymell Murphy (6'5, 210), Tola Akomolafe (6'6, 210), Jerome Frink (6'6, 190)

Style of Play: This is absolutely the worst type of style for the BC freshmen guards to open their college careers with. Richard Pitino stated that he wants an up-and-down game with a lot of pressing and a lot of 3 pointers.

BC is in good shape if: They break the press. FIU is going to completely rely on their ability to force turnovers off of their press, so Hanlan and Rahon (who have been known for their ball-handling) better be ready to face pressure. If they can break the press effectively, FIU's defense will have trouble all game.

BC is in trouble if: FIU forces a lot of turnovers. Look, it's obvious that there will be a learning curve for these freshmen guards. While both were praised by Donahue as being much more ready than the sophomores were before their freshman year, they obioulsy still have to learn what it's like to play college basketball. If FIU gets a lot of turnovers and easy baskets off their press, they will stay in the game.

Outlook: At this point we have no idea what we will see from both teams. FIU only returns one starter, and has 9 new faces on their roster. BC should be improved, but whether Hanlan and Rahon will be on the same page with the sophomores remains to be seen. If BC breaks the press effectively, then there's no reason they should lose this game. I think there's a very good chance BC wins this game, but I wouldn't be shocked if the Panthers pull off the upset.

I am excited! Starting 5 is Hanlon, Rahon, Jackson, Clifford, Anderson. Seems reasonable to me considering FIU does not have a lot of big guys.

Yup, good lineup for this team.

Meter just interviewed the Don, he certainly did sound surprised when he was asked about JD, though he did say all the right things.

Hanlan is the answer, that's clear. Anderson is having an off game, but his motor is getting him his stats

Anderson and Clifford are much improved. Also see improvement from Heckmann and Odio,

Hanlan has a ton of talent. I like watching Rahon run the show though. Needs to find that jumper.

So far so good. Interior and 3PA D still stinks.

Well no real complaints at halftime. Frosh look good, frontline looks like they got even better. Not shooting well other than Heckmann and dunks, and the defense is still weak, but I'll take this, it is better.

Even though FIU is awful, our team is much improved.

Also, our freshman are damn good. Impressive.

Rahon may be one of those guys opponents fans hate, which would be cool. Clifford is dominating but it could be the competition. Anderson is moving right along. Odio looks serviceable, van nest might be too. Hanlan is pretty good. Jackson is having a bad shooting day. Heckmann started the run to pull away but remains san enigma. Rubin tries hard.

Well, this is what happens when you play no defense. One cold streak on O and you let a shitty team back in the game. Love the Don on offense, but he makes Skinner look like Dom Capers on the defensive end.

Well, the good play was short lived. Some guys need to start hitting WIDE open shots, or this will be a long season.
