Kentucky's recruiting pitch is certainly laced with money, but it's coming out of NBA owners' pockets. The essentials of Kentucky recruiting are: (1) the promise of one-and-done (or maybe two-and-done) NBA riches; (2) Calipari's proven coaching ability to increase those riches by adding to the NBA market value of his players; (3) the grotesque and hysterical adulation provided by the program's Big Blue Nation fan base. It may boil down to implicit bribery with someone else's money, but it works and it's hard to see how the NCAA can do anything about it -- teflon-coated corruption through gaming the system (which Calipari seems to be even better at than he is at coaching).
