I was just trying to track down some info on 2010 commit Brady Heslip. Here's some of what I came across. He looks like he might be a good one.

The Best Shooter in the Land?
July 1, 2009

Last night I had the unexpected opportunity of watching Brady Heslip man-handle his opposition in 40 minutes of play with no rest. This 6′1 Guelph commit plays for the Halton Ballers for the UTM Summer League. This league has featured some top competition and the likes of Sefton Barrett, (Central Michigan) Paul Blake, (Cape Breton) Daviiau Rodney, (Humber College) David Tyndale (York) and Tamoy Lewis (Lakeland) to name a few.

Immediately after the game, I sat down with Heslip, and it turned out that he wasn’t impressed with his performance. “I had a bad game. I made some bad decisions and had too many turnovers,” he said. It would be interesting to see what a good game looks like considering he scorched the opposition for 46 points, making 8 three-pointers and distributing well, adding 8 assists.

As I sat on the bleachers and observed, it looked as if Heslip barely broke a sweat. With a calm but self-assured demeanour, Brady knocked down shot after shot while maintaining that same swagger. A word of advice for the CIS: the best way to defend him would be to try and deny him the ball; once he gets even a millimetre of daylight, he’s launching it.

Throughout the course of the game, it became clear to me that Brady Heslip was among the top shooters, if not the top shooter in the nation! But how does he do it? “Every day I go in the gym and get my shots up. My warm up consists of 20 makes from the mid-range and 20 from deep. Then I get started with more shooting drills, focusing on maintaining the same form every time.”

Heslip has received interest from South of the border including University of Toledo and UNC-Greensboro, however chose to stay home and commit to Guelph. “I have a good relationship with the Guelph coach and I’d rather start for five years than go to a low major and scrap for minutes”, said Brady. “Unless I get a high-major look, I will be playing for Guelph in September.”

BC Lands Brady Heslip
August 27, 2009

Talented 6’2” point Guard from Burlington, Ontario has committed to play ball with the Boston College Eagles. Brady Heslip exploded this past summer on the AAU circuit playing for power house Grassroots Canada.

Several other top-tier schools took notice of the sharpshooter, including Georgetown, Connecticut, Cincinnati, among others.

Grassroots head coach Ro Russell speaks on Heslip’s stellar summer performance: “While Cory Joseph and Myck Kabongo were at other events, he took full advantage of the opportunity to lead our team and he averaged 33 points and 6 assists a game.”

“Coaches started to seriously take notice after that. He followed it up with another strong performance in Minnesota (Best Buy Minneapolis) where he averaged 27 points and 5 assists, and then finally in Vegas (Adidas Super 64), where he capped it off with 18 point and 4 assists per game even though we had Cory, Myck and Tristan [Thompson] back.”

Heslip has made major improvement to his overall game and he has great basketball IQ. He can play off the ball with his smooth shooting touch or run the show at the point guard position with his improved handles. He also possesses good decision making and passing abilities.

Heslip had committed to Guelph University a few months ago and was set to make his CIS debut this fall, but with the recent buzz surrounding him, his plans quickly changed. He will join the Eagles this January, and will look to make an immediate impact in the ultra-competitive Atlantic Coast Conference.

Russell adds, “Brady’s is true example of determination-meets-work-ethics-meets-opportunity-meets-dream. B.C. has a tradition of letting their point guards shoot the ball and they showed a lot of interest, so he should have a good career there.”

ESPN Evaluation

August, 2009: Heslip has burst onto the recruiting scene with his tough hard-nosed play and his ability to shoot the basketball. He has a great stroke from deep and plays with a great pace and confidence. On this team (Team Canada/Adidas Nations) he played off the ball because of Cory Joseph, but showed his point guard skills when he got the opportunity. He understands how to play and is a high percentage decision maker. He has a good handle and is able to get by his defender with deceptive quickness. He moves well without the ball; he uses and reads screens and does a nice job spacing up off the ball in transition or off penetration. He showed a solid mid-range game after lifting his defender with a shot fake and can make a floater over the bigs. This kid has savvy and leadership qualities that should make him an asset to any program.

For those obsessed with offers or think the coaches don't care:

Brady Heslip chooses Boston College....

“I just loved it there,” Heslip told Scout.com. “I love the coaches, the facilities and I love the city of Boston too.” Heslip picked up scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Utah State, Georgetown and Fairfield and also entertained interest from UCLA and Gonzaga, but he opted for B.C. because it felt like the right fit. “I went on an unofficial visit to UCLA and after that I visited Boston College and I just knew I didn’t need to visit anymore colleges,” Heslip said. "The coaches were awesome the place is amazing and the situation will be great for me at Boston College as a freshman.”

From Jeff Goodman's blog:

NEW HAMPTON BUILT AROUND BACKCOURT

It's difficult to question evaluation skills of Boston College.

Remember, this is a program that has found under-the-radar guys like Craig Smith, Jared Dudley and Tyrese Rice.

Can Brady Heslip be next?

I'm not sure I'd go that far, but the 6-foot-1 Canadian guard is a big-time shooter who also knows how to run a team.

Heslip's shot wasn't falling on Wednesday night, but I've seen him before while playing with Grassroots Canada and he can really shoot the ball from the perimeter.

New Hampton coach Pete Hutchins raves about his toughness and said BC recruited him to play point guard.

Heslip said the only two schools that were recruiting him entering the spring and summer were UNC Greensboro and Toledo, and that neither offered a scholarship.

Heslip got the opportunity to run his summer team in Cincinnati, Minnesota and Springfield, Mass., when both Cory Joseph and Myck Kobongo weren't in attendance.

"I was able to play the point, and we had some success," Heslip said.

Heslip goes up against another guy who is beginning to make a name for himself every day at New Hampton. New Hampshire native Jordan Laguerre, a 6-foot-1 tough and athletic scoring guard who is in the Class of 2011, showed the ability to make shots from beyond the arc and is also able to get to the basket and finish around the rim.

Rhode Island, UMass, Pittsburgh and Providence have shown interest. Hutchins said that Purdue and Alabama are expected to come up to evaluate him in the next couple of weeks.

In addition to Heslip and Laguerre, New Hampton also has a frontcourt that includes Michigan-bound skilled forward Evan Smotryz, who is nursing a hamstring injury, and Drexel-bound big man Dartaye Ruffin, who has made dramatic strides in the past year.

Kyle Cain, a 6-foot-7 athletic forward out of Chicago who has scheduled visits to Northern Illinois, Ball State and Wisconsin-Green Bay and also has offers from Rhode Island and Nevada, should receive extensive playing time.
