don't blame me, i voted for kodos.

ps - clifford is not good at basketball. he is good at being tall and that lucks him into some mistakes that allow him to appear marginally talented at basketball, but don't let those mistakes fool you... he is not good at basketball.

so take that list two and stick it up your list one

I genuinely believe Clifford is an acceptable, "ACC-caliber" center. If we had a team with a star (Hanlan) and nine other rotation players roughly as good as Clifford, I think we would be an NCAA tourney team. The problem was that after the injuries we only had an 8 man rotation, which is in my opinion not enough unless you have superior talent, and that we were playing so many players who were below the acceptable level. That's why I don't think Clifford is a bad player, the team got in trouble when it had to give so much time to players who were below him (Owens - adds too little, Odio - actively hurts us, Cain Carney - actively hurts us). I don't deny at all that the team's overall performance this year was quite bad, I just like to deconstruct it further.

Deconstructing it further:

ACC star - Hanlan
ACC solid player - Brown
ACC/America East schizophrenic that could have nights of good - Heckmann
ACC marginal bench/role player - Batten, Magarity

ACC athlete that isn't a basketball player - Owens.
America East athlete that isn't a basketball player - Odio
America East player that isn't an athlete- Drago

Tall guy - Clifford
Overweight tall guy - Caudill

Clifford's shortcomings get magnified when you surround him with America East level talent. On a Top 8 ACC squad, Clifford isn't starting or playing 28 minutes. Compare him to FSUs big men.

Don't excuse Owens either, he kills BC on both ends of the floor. He makes no attempt to rebound on D, which is shocking for an athlete like him.

Batten and Magerity are better than you're giving them credit for. They are 7/8th men off the bench on a reasonable ACC squad.

I'm optimistic about next year (meaning we'll be better), especially if Hanlan stays and at least one of the new recruits can make a substantial impact.

I see Clifford at the 5 w/ Diallo and Magarity sharing time in the 4/5 slots, esp. when we want to go big. Turner seeing time at the stretch 4 when we go smaller.

With what we have right now, I say 9 deep:

1 - Hanlan / Hicks / Robinson
2 - Milon / Hicks / Robinson
3 - Turner / Owens / Milon
4 - Magarity / Diallo / Turner
5 - Clifford / Magarity / Diallo

I didn't say he was Ryan Anderson good. He was half (13/6) that and should have been better.

I am in the camp that says Clifford playing cautiously, and for ridiculous minutes a game running up and down the floor being the only big man is what hurt his performance. Get another big that can at least box out, and Clifford is a starting ACC center. He will do fine next year.

EDIT: unless he pulls an Odio, which means a lot of things but in this case it means that he saw a ghost or something, and now suddenly plays like shit and is rapidly regressing. DOUBLE EDIT: yes, those ghosts were Conte ghosts. TRIPLE EDIT: Yes, I agree, he should be used to ghosts by now
