Edit: beat me to it.

Good to hear as he's definitely worth an interview. Sure he has some questions but every candidate does.

Speaking of which, I find it interesting Feldman mentioned Hue Jackson, after I was saying he would be a great choice for Cal.

That's a great article. Roman's clearly got the drive and the football knowledge. If BB wants to hire the anti-Spaz then he should take a real close look at him.

This is his 2nd season as the 49ers OC. But, before that, he was Harbaugh's OC for his last 2 seasons).

Btw, reading about Roman's brother, it seems like he would get the team more involved with the Campus School... which is always an excellent experience for both the kids and players.

From BC or another school? BC interviewing PCJ is a no brainer.

Anyone have ESPN Insider? Looks like there's an article written by Haney with his thoughts on several open gigs - BC included.

Curious what he has to say - although I think most stuff written at this point is based on Blaudschun's insight that HJS stole.

Nothing new, the fact that he lists TOB sort of discredits the entire thing

Boston College Eagles

How good is the job?
Expectations are fairly modest, but Frank Spaziani always appeared to be in over his head. Tom O'Brien (seven winning seasons in 10 years) and Jeff Jagodzinski (two in two) found ways to recruit and win in Chestnut Hill, but it's been a decline ever since. BC, like Wake Forest and Duke in the ACC, has to deal with a heightened academic standard. It's a tough job because of that, but it's possible to break through to be a division contender.

What are they looking for?
Regularly going to bowls is enough to maintain satisfaction. The Eagles went to 12 in a row from 1999 to 2010. It isn't an impossible bar to hurdle, even while minding academia.

Candidates

Bob Diaco, Notre Dame defensive coordinator: The Irish's defense has been one of the best stories in college football, and Diaco's name has been linked to this job for several weeks. Notre Dame's suffocating defense has allowed just eight touchdowns in 33 red zone trips by opponents this season. BC would be a nice place for Diaco to begin his head-coaching career. His previous coaching stops as an assistant, Cincinnati and Virginia, are similar-tiered programs.

Darrell Hazell, Kent State Golden Flashes head coach: Hazell coached previously at Army and Rutgers, so he understands some of the Northeast dynamic. He turned around the Golden Flashes from a 5-7 first season to 11-1 -- and on the verge of an improbable BCS berth -- in his second year.

Tom O'Brien, former NC State and Boston College head coach: They wouldn't take him back, would they? Wait, why wouldn't they? He was 75-45 at BC and also had a winning record at NC State (40-35) despite his firing Sunday.

Greg Roman, San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator: This was the first job I heard in connection with Roman, though others -- more appealing and lucrative jobs -- have opened in the time since.

Don Treadwell, Miami (Ohio) head coach: Treadwell's pair of 4-8 seasons at Miami is nothing special, but there are two reasons to believe he'll at least get a look: (1) He was the co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach at BC in 1997 and '98 under O'Brien, and (2) new Boston College AD Brad Bates came from Miami (Ohio). I've written several times that Bates' connection to the MAC might lead to his giving some coaches from the league, Treadwell included, a glance.

Whipple and Murphy??? Why not Kevin Gilbride, Edsall and Toby?

BTW... if Roman is hired by BC or someone else, you'd have to guess that the 49ers LB coach (Jim Leavitt) might go with him as the DC.

We'll have someone (or close to announce someone) around December 9th. I don't see how it goes longer than 12/16.

Terrible blogger. Clueless. The fact he list TOB and Treadwell speaks volumes. Treadwell is not even in the top 3 coaches in the Mac BC would consider. As for what BC is looking for, he is again clueless. Going back to bowls? 10 or 11 out of 14 teams per year in the ACC will go to bowls. That is the definition of being slightly below average.

PCJ would be a a homerun hire, but there are several other candidates that I would be very happy with.

If it's Whipple or Murphy, I will be really really pissed.

Ive never understood the people who say no on PCJ because "he will be Marone 2.0".

Granted its in the BEAST, but Marone has arguably taken a program in worse shape than BC is in, and has an outside (VERYY OUTSIDE) shot at the BCS this season. With a win this week against Temple it will be his 2nd 8 win season in 4 years.

I like PCJ. I think his background and name recognition (being from NOLA) will provide him with an immediate leg up in recruiting (which is also a major advantage that Diaco has right now, and one that someone like Doereen/MAC candidate may lack).

I think as far as coordinators go, saying you worked with Brees/Payton and one of the best offenses in the NFL is a major selling point (like BOB except he had more recent college exposure). Ultimately, it comes down to the staff that any of these guys could hire, but as a face for the program, Im 100% on board with PCJ should he turn out to be a serious candidate.

BC has multiple reasons to make contact. Joe Linta's son TJ is considered a solid Class of 2014 QB prospect. UVA, Duke, Syracuse and Rutgers have been recruiting him since the summer.

BOB's buyout is nearly $10mm??? Let me say this again... BC will not hire any coach with a significant buyout. And, in all honesty, when you have coaches like Roman available who will require no buyout, why would you unless you were certain to be getting Saban?

That's really not that great. But, it's plenty enough to hire any of the main targets. But, you can cross Mullen, Golden, BOB off the list (as if it was ever really going to happen).

Really??? Because they make more in their current positions.

Oh... of course... BC should ask if they want to pay millions to their current employer in order to come work at BC for less money (and possibly in a CUSA-like conference). That has about as much chance of happening as you getting a clue.

What NFL coordinator has gotten $2 million when he took a head job in college? I am sure there might be one or two. But they were probably the hottest commodities going. Roman is not necessarily even the most sought after guy on the staff. While Roman is attractive, he might not be in Cal's top 3 at all. I could easily see Mike MacIntyre, Gary Anderson, and Tim DeRuyter as coaches higher up on their list who are all attainable. Let alone some guys they might pay up for. For the record I like Roman.

To compare, here's a few schools currently paying around $2 mil for their HC:

Northwestern - Pat Fitzgerald (1.8 mil)
Mich. St. - Mark Dantonio(1.83)
Arizona - RichRod (1.91)
Kansas St. - Bill Snyder (1.95)
Clemson - Dabo (1.95, but they're also paying their OC 1.2 mil)
Miami - Al Golden (2.0)
Maryland - Randy Edsall (2.0)
Utah - Kyle Whittingham (2.0)
USF - Skip Holtz (2.0)
ASU - Todd Grahm (2.0)
Texas A&M - Kevin Sumlin (2.0)
Virginia - Mike London (2.1)
Texas Tech - Tommy Tubberville (2.1)
Wake Forest - Jim Grobe (2.2)

Didn't PSU just give BOB $2.3mm? Outside of BC, I don't recall his name being linked to any other jobs.

I think if we are hiring someone like Strong, Calhoun, Mendenhall, PCJ or Roman, we will have to pay $2mm. Diaco may also command that if more than one school is involved. However, the MAC coaches, Narduzzi, Wilder, Cristobal or similar candidates won't get that and will have to be happy with something like $1.5.
