I guess this is the only downside of recruiting the "big picture" guys. College football or a career in medicine isn't typically a decision most people have to make.

:kudos to this board for accepting this kid's awesome decision. If he were at a factory, they'd be bitching about losing one of their highly rated recruits to academics. Of course, at those schools he wouldn't be making this decision anyway.

Congrats Ugo. This is a win in the game of life. Study hard.

From what I remember, freshman and sophmore years were when the real weeding out took place. Most of that was becuase half the kids in the School of A&S were pre-med initially. If he was able to balance football and academics his first year he should be able to stay pre-med for the next three. I hope the kid knows what he's getting into.

There is nothing to bitch about. The kid deserves a chance at an education and he wasn't going to see the field much this year (and maybe next). Just because teh internets experts at Rivals liked how he looked without his shirt doesn't mean he was going to be a player.

If you look at the wash out rate for our four stars, this is one of the better endings.

Is this the alleged "good news" coming from Houston that we have been so patiently waiting on?

Not yet. In 15 years, Okpara is going to botch NorthEndEagle's sex change operation.

And this is why Boston College is, well, Boston College. You people herald a choice like this as if it's sensible, no matter the cost to the football program. You forget the mantra: Let's build a university of which our football team can be proud.

Contrast with a University community that has its eye on the ball, on what matters. Look at what's happened since Bobby Bowden let Samari Rolle pursue a Rhodes Scholarship, and let his starting QB began graduate studies as a redshirt sophomore. Since those disastrous choices, FSU has lost its way. They've fallen short not just on the field, but more importantly, in recruiting rankings and in preseason polls where the foundation is built. Consequently, teams like BC have risen, and the rest of us have suffered as a result.

But unlike BC, people at FSU are doing something about it. Trustees are calling for Bowden's dismissal in the press. Powers at FSU are saying "no more" to professors who enforce cheating, "j'accuse" to NCAA busybodies. The modifier used to describe Bowden's departure is "when", not "if". Resources are being generated to put FSU back onto its rightful track. A track that leads to success where it matters.

So that when an 60-year-old ex-Nole back on his career as a shoe salesman, he can smile and know that yes, that General Studies degree was well, well worth it as I celebrated victory in the Chick-fil-a Bowl.

fwiw, Okpara was a 3 star. Okoroha, the safety from MD, was the 4 star.

If it makes the kid and his parents happy then it's the right decision for him but let's not cannonize the kid. There are plenty of D1A athletes in medical schools and there are plenty of former D1A athlete medical doctors so going to medical school and being an athlete are not mutually exclusive.

And, taking a lighter course load to play athletics and putting off being a doctor from age 30 to 32 really isn't a big deal. So, if he wanted to, he could manage both. I am sure there is more to this decision than just plain academics vs. athletics.
