Rettig update

Postby HJS on Mon Oct 05, 2009 4:08 pm

I believe he was on campus for the FSU game. But, before boarding a plane, Zander's favorite recruit had himself a nice game.

Shinskie's play could hurt us with Rettig. If Shinskie keeps it up and we are winning, Rettig might fear sitting behind a late 20s QB for the next three years.

It's a win/win for us. If Rettig ends up being good enough to overtake Shinskie, it means he is very talented (because Shinskie has looked pretty good). If Shinskie does keep his starting job, then we get the experience and talent, and a 4 year starter.

I thought about that Yesterday; I was afraid to even say it out loud. The flip side is that with the way Shinskie's been getting clobbered, I'd be shocked if he ran the table for 3.5 years.

I think ATL means "what if Rettig goes elsewhere because he wants playing time." Just 2 weeks ago people (me included) were looking ahead to the Rettig era. Now Shinskie has shown a borderline NFL arm. The progressions still aren't there, but he had the most significant improvement in 2 weeks that I've ever seen. I'm not sure who deserves the coaching credit, but someone deserves a raise.

Shinksie's success is nothing but positive. If Retig redshirts next year, he would have two years after Shinski even if Shinski stayed all 4 years. If Shinski has a lot of success, he may leave early. I know he has said he plans on staying 4 years, but if someone waives $70Mill in his face, he may reconsider.

There is no way Shinskie actually plans on staying for 4 years. That's what he's supposed to say and he said it. But the guy has virtually no professional future if he comes out at 28. In his mind, he's hoping to jump after 2, 3 tops, and everyone knows it. He just wants to play well enough to secure a draft spot, get into the league, and get on a ladder somewhere.

If Shinskie plays well enough to beat out Rettig after Rettig redshirts, Shinskie is gone. He ain't waiting 4 years for a shot at the NFL if he proves he is an accomplished pocket passer after the next two seasons.

I would not even be surprised to see him jump after this year. I don't think he has a good chance of that at all, but unlike most guys I bet he only wants an assurance he's going to get drafted in the mid rounds. He doesn't have the same concerns as typical draft picks thanks to baseball money. He just needs to know he's going to go anywhere he can develop on a pro roster.

Meh. Dude never made it past double A, and was a mid-round draft pick with what I imagine was a minimal bonus, if any. I'd be surprised if he has much saved up.

Yeah, I just saw he got a 300K signing bonus. That's pretty far away from Fuck You money. But I still say he's more concerned with getting drafted than trying to get drafted high and he'll go whenver he's assured of the former.

I know the Shinskie/Weinke comparisons are tired, but Weinke played pretty well (if I recall correctly) as a sophomore and junior. He stayed all 4 years. I know these guys situations are different, but I dont see any indication one way are the other that he would stay or go early.

If Shinskie continues on his successful trajectory, he is gone after next season. That is all.

Couldn't agree more and not to detract from his success but, he isn't exactly putting up Matt Ryan type numbers.

Chris Crane, practice squad. Any questions?

5 TDs and 1 pick in his first two starts (also against ACC competition) is better than any true freshman that I remember. And its not like he has a "run and shoot offensive coordinator". No one is comparing him to Matt Ryan.

If he continues to progress as rapidly as he has progressed over the last three weeks, he'll be the best QB in college football by the end of the season, let alone next year. That sarcastic comment out of the way, if he plays at the level of the last couple of weeks for the next season and a half, I agree, he's gone.

Point is if he wants to make it to the NFL he will need to leave sooner rather than later as it is harder for a much older (27-29) QB than a semi old (25-26) QB to make it to the NFL. If he does want to make it and the oppurtunity is there for him after this season he would be crazy not to take it.

Quinton Porter made an NFL practice squad. The "Shinskie to the NFL" talk is not crazy.

Look how old Warner was when he made it to the NFL.

That being said I think he can leave after his Sophmore year if he kicks ass, but unless he is dominating he should stay until his junior year. We are really rushing to crown him the next Matt Ryan and I think we should hold off. He still has a lot to learn. Looking off receivers, learning the playbook without needing Gunnell, not over throwing people and sensing the rush.

I think Shinskie will play four years because he values education and wants to serve as a mentor to his young teammates.

Seriously though even if he keeps it up, he has to play three years at BC. Because he's older he has to come into the NFL a finished product.
