It's in the article- he didn't know until he went to the hospital.
On the medical screening issue, they don't put you through a full body scan, that's for sure. If you don't have that part of your body scanned, when would they pick it up? While I know that counting vital organs is now standard at a 20 week ultrasound, the technology probably wasn't so great 22 odd years ago when Jarvis was in utero.

I'm not a doctor, but wouldn't renal agenesis lead to other noticeable health problems, like high blood pressure?
