Eugene Jarvis has a lacerated kidney

Postby apbc12 on Wed Sep 16, 2009 10:52 am

Yikes. I knew the kid took a shot, but I didn't know it was that bad. Also, he found out he only had one kidney in the first place. Get well soon, kid.

Jebus! I hope the doctors are able to get him healthy and that the NCAA grants a redshirt for this.

Are the docs going to let him play with one kidney?

How did nobody know that he only had one kidney? To get a scholarship to play college sports, how thorough are the physicals? I'd think that if I were going to offer someone four/five years of free tuition, room and board based on their athletic ability, I'd want to know as much about their medical history as possible.

If he only had one kidney and it was lacerated, I think that means he is currently kidneyless.

Wasn't it Bowman that put the killshot on him after he broke through the first tackle? Clean hit but even former Washington Redskin and Carolina Panther Johnny Numbnuts stopped his stammering and remarked how hard it was on the 360 broadcast.

It's in the article- he didn't know until he went to the hospital.

On the medical screening issue, they don't put you through a full body scan, that's for sure. If you don't have that part of your body scanned, when would they pick it up? While I know that counting vital organs is now standard at a 20 week ultrasound, the technology probably wasn't so great 22 odd years ago when Jarvis was in utero.

I bet he has to quit. That would be so sad. UGH.

Better than having a Fagagina like Zanderpussie.

I hope he turns out alright. At only 5 5 he was a productive back. Did anyone catch this quote by the coach?

Having one kidney is not a major issue - i/e the body works totally fine with 1 kidney. The fact that this kid's one kidney got messed up is scary, and in a way it's fluky. So long as his 1 kidney heals 100%, I think it will be up to him if he wants to continue playing. Not sure only having 1 kidney would preclude someone from competing, so long as the 1 kidney is perfectly healthy and the reason for not having 2 is not a chronic issue.

I'm not a doctor, but wouldn't renal agenesis lead to other noticeable health problems, like high blood pressure?

I think you're mis-diagnosing this kid. As I noted above, assuming this isn't a chronic issue, and that he's missing one of his kidneys not unlike someone randomly missing a toe when they're born, he can live a perfectly healthy life. My FIL has one kidney, and it's working fine. All recipients of kidney transplants only get 1 kidney. The reason that the transplanted kidney fails eventually is usually due to organ rejection and pre-existing conditions that caused the original kidneys to fail in the first place. I'm not a doctor either, but know a little more stuff about renal issues due to the FIL's situation.

My son was born with 1 kidney, and even his specialist at Mass General didn't completely rule out football.

His father, however, has.

Other sports are fine, but you cringe when he catches a fastball in the back or takes a hard charge on the court.

Also, Jarvis would probably be required to sign an insurance release/waiver of liability.

I'm not trying to make a diagnosis, I just was curious as to how someone playing sports at such a high level (division 1A football, not Kent State) and just find out about it now.

I guess I was just interested in how much due diligence a school goes through before offering an athletic scholarship.

Kidney, absence of one
Explanation: Athlete needs individual assessment for contact, collision, and limited-contact sports. Protective equipment may reduce risk of injury to the remaining kidney sufficiently to allow participation in most sports, providing such equipment remains in place during activity.

Technically, he can be cleared to play. That being said, there aren't many people that take more of a beating than a 5'5" running back. Personally, I don't think it's worth the risk of losing the only kidney he has.

The fact that he played two games is irrelevant to the analysis.

Playing a down only bars the automatically available first redshirt year. Jarvis already used that. A 6th year medical redshirt is completely arbitrary and at the discretion of the NCAA

Eugene Jarvis is a trooper, and a hell of a running back, too. He's only 5'6 and ran for 1,600+ yards his sophomore year.
