Now, the Irish aren't averse to playing a patsy or two. Until the last few years, Navy was about as big a gimme as you could get. But because of its historic rivalries and independence, and the fact opponents will always circle Notre Dame on their schedule, Notre Dame's schedule is always going to be rugged.
This is the type of stuff that I can't stand about Notre Dame and some people's romance with this team. Notre Dame does not have a "rugged" schedule by any means. Looking at that schedule now, the toughest games would be USC, BC, and maybe Pitt. Sure, Michigan used to be, well, Michigan and you can throw them back on that list once they start playing football again, but no other teams on that schedule are what could be considered "rugged" teams, especially considering the greatness that Notre Dame aspires too. I will agree that it bothers me that we have two teams at the top of the polls in Florida and Texas who play cupcakes week in and week out. Florida's toughest game of the season is going to come in the SEC championship and Texas has already played its toughest game against Oklahoma. But all that said, I don't think anyone would consider Notre Dame's schedule a tough one, they are just losing to mediocre teams because they are a mediocre team. Don't blame Notre Dame's fall from grace on a "rugged" schedule when it isn't.
Much similar to the liberal bias in the media, I sometimes think there's a Notre Dame bias in the media.
