I’ll take a contrarian position and say that this will ultimately hurt the SEC, Ohio State and Clemson. Everyone knows that the SEC cheats and cheats badly. Ditto for Ohio State. As for Clemson, it doesn’t seem to be as a rampant, but having younger cousins who have graduated from there in the last four or five years, they say certain players drive unusually nice cars and seem to have more cash then you’d expect when out on the town.

Now consider the following, now, rather than grubby under the table payments you can launder those payments through wealthy alumni granting NIL deals. It’s all legal and entirely dependent on what the market can bear. How well do you think the SEC or Ohio State or Clemson for that matter is going to do in an arms race against Texas or USC or Phil Knight University? Shit, Michigan and Notre Dame have more than a few billionaire alums who are probably sick and tired of them losing kids to tOSU and the Southern Baby Rapists. You don’t think a few of those guys—now that is entirely legal—might want to show the country club rich bubbas from Bama, LSU, etc. what real money looks like? You don’t think the studio head/SC alum isn’t just itching to show the Bama trial lawyer who has been buying cars and slipping thousand dollar handshakes for the last fifteen years how much money he and his cohort are capable of paying out.

It won’t matter for Saban, as he is old enough and comfortable enough that he isn’t leaving Bama. But what of Dabo and his staff? When Texas or USC tell him we can pay you more than Clemson (because they can) and we can pay your players a lot more than Clemson as well, do you think he might be ready to move?

As I noted earlier, I spent last week at a place in the North Woods of Wisconsin with a very wealthy Texan or two, a USC grad who is a prominent figure on the business side of the entertainment industry and a couple of Notre Dame grads/hedge fund/Goldman execs and a Michigan grad who wisely exited the practice of law to become an Amazon exec—they were all laughing about what is coming. To hear them talk, tOSU is the only current baby rapist that has the capital to compete with the money the aforementioned schools could offer up. They were also laughing about a few teams outside the P5 who could come in and stomp all over the likes of LSU, Auburn, etc. SMU, TCU and Houston have some billionaires who will likely be getting heavily involved in NIL market. Vandy, may about to become a much more attractive job—something Clark Lea may have considered when turning down a few better offers to go home to his alma mater—Ross Perot Jr. is purportedly interested and he is not the only billionaire grad Vandy might be able to put to work. Thing is, there are a lot of guys who would like to own a Big 4 professional sports team, but there only a few seats at those tables. Now, those guys have the unfettered ability to put alma mater in the playoffs. What do you think happens? Another player to watch in that regard is BYU.

Last, another thing that might be coming very shortly is the break up of the conference system. USC and Oregon are both thinking of leaving the PAC Whatever and Texas decides on a yearly basis whether to stay in the Big 12. Some guys I have worked with in tech are telling me that as people increasingly cut the cord and move to streaming, some of the bigger brand names are crunching the numbers and trying to figure out if they can make more money with a direct streaming model rather than sharing TV/Streaming money with the rest of their conference. USC has apparently determined they can make more money from a direct model, but has not pulled the trigger because they are still fleshing out what a national schedule might mean for them. They are working very closely with Notre Dame in that regard.

It will correct itself by public shaming via Twitter. The misogynistic gym, American Top Team, has not made a similar offer to 90 female U athletes. This blatantly sexist move further exacerbates the gender wage gap. Where are the Title IX lawsuits???

Nothing in any of this post makes sense.

That’s because there is an inverse correlation between wokeness and understanding.

Humor me about how Title IX applies here then. Your post reads like a shitty news show C block bingo card.

The thing that gets messy and you saw with the basketball stuff is you have to bribe these guys before they get on campus...which is still illegal. I think the nil guarantees are a nice recruiting tool but ultimately are just going to be one step closer to a break off minor league.

So you either (1) don’t know what Title IX is about or who it applies to outside of “guys and girls in college” or (2) just learned and realized your argument is dumb.

The only thing good about this divergence is that you accidentally acknowledged how nonsensical and detached from reality wokeness really is.

Dick, largely agree this is only a major sea change if you believe the factories weren’t already paying these kids similar amounts quietly.

The SCOTUS case and the NCAA’s incompetence will cause the break within 10 years. NCAA should not be in the business of making money. They should only facilitate the scheduling of amateur/non-profitable sports. If colleges feel the need to run minor league teams from their campuses as a way to entertain students (like they would a concert), they can set up a for-profit subsidiary and run it accordingly. Ultimately, I predict the professionalization of college sports will have a negative long-term effect on the athlete.

This is a solid IB'ing of not answering the question and ascribing beliefs to people because you realize your viewpoint is incorrect.

it will just further separate the "haves" that play on the larger networks and bring more eyeballs than the "have nots" that play on the ocho and have eleventeen fans that pop in and out of the game depending on apple picking season or the items on the fence at costco

more top heavy than 4 schools signing 55% of the 5* over the last couple of years? or more top heavy than those same 4 schools occupying all but 1 of the spots in the championship game over the last 6 years?

Claver's question is super important, and so should be properly stated:

How much more top-heavy can they be?

Who knows the correct answer to this question? +2 from moi to whomever answers it correctly.

it could be 3 teams instead of 4
it could be 2 teams instead of 4
it could be 1 team instead of 4

claver2010 {l Wrote}:i didn't know a 12 team playoff meant more than 2 teams in the championship game

it means the teams decide who is on the field for the final game rather than the pundits. that's got all sorts of "lucky bounce" or "crooked ref" opportunities. plus, it's 12 teams eligible for the final 2 spots instead of just 4. statistics alone leads one to believe the chances have to be higher

conversely if trevor lawrence gets wuflu part 2 (electric bugaloo) and they lose two games they're still able to get into a 12 team playoff

I just hope that VMI, Villanova, and Colgate have room for BC on their schedules in 2028.
