Thamel on scholarship logjam quotes Bosco (CA) Coach Negro

Pete Thamel wrote about how the impact on roster planning post-2021 from the extra year in particular, and also the liberalization of transfer rules. He spoke with Mack Brown, Dave Clawson and Dave Doeren, along with Schiano among others.

St John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) coach Jason Negro made perhaps the most striking comments, given that his 4-star player Sione Hala committed to us. What he says is consistent with the Massachusetts HS coach who tells his kid “take the BC offer and see if a better school like ND or Michigan offers you later.” Maybe it’s no surprise Hala is still taking all his official visits given what Negro said to Thamel about the logjam from “super seniors” an the expanded transfer portal:

“I have to believe that it’s going to be the biggest travesty that the NCAA has done for kids,” said Jason Negro, the veteran coach at St. John Bosco in Bellflower, California. “There’s going to be so many kids stuck in there, and I don’t think we’ve seen the full impact that the clogged portal has had for another year or two.”

Thamel goes on to describe the trickle-down effect on recruiting, where coaches purportedly are being extra stingy with offers to incoming freshmen. I’ve bolded the reference to Negro’s thoughts:

How significant will the trickle down be? Rivals.com recruiting analyst Woody Wommack estimates there are 75% fewer players committed now compared to a year ago at this time. Scholarships are so precious that coaches are being judicious, as Negro observed that his players don’t have as many offers as usual at this point.

“Coaches know they can’t waste any spots,” Wommack said. “Anyone who is committed is likely going to have to work out in front of their coaches over the next month. Some kids are going to be surprised when they show up for a fun official visit and get handed a pair of cleats.”

On the whole this staff seems to be building relationships and recruiting more effectively. A team like ours probably replaces outgoing transfers with better talent. It seems worthwhile to connect with Coach Negro, treat Hala well and build our reputation with SoCal Catholic coaches, even if Hala jilts us at the end.
