Grosel was not good tonight. Don"t throw the picks and he goes for 300 in a win.

I don’t think the Zay one was on him. First one was him expecting Hunter to win a 50/50 ball. Thought his third was the worst of all of them. Not just for the timing of it (late in the game) but the fact he stared down Hunter Long and then threw a ball that was not even close.

But, with the way the defense was not tackling, it probably would not have mattered anyway. We made a goofy look8ng white dude look like Tim Tebow.

Completed 70% of his passes. Not saying he played great; I just thinking you are shitting on him unnecessarily. He played good enough for BC to win this game had the defense played ok. And, take away two of those picks, his performance would be a forever remembered single game performance to overcome that shitty effort on the other side of the ball.

Ok. When Grosel plays I don't care this much.

Grosel was late with the ball. Stared down his receivers. Underthrew almost every pass. He still goes down as the best single game passer in history.
.

After the first TD pass to Flowers, which was beautiful, every pass was late and/or under thrown. I have never seen so many BC receivers so wide open. That said, Grosel was good enough. The talent on D is so bad, despite the fact that many on this board insist that Daz was a great recruiter.
Also, Hansen is an idiot, the OLine did a good job of pass blocking.

Daz ran the defense into the ground after Don Brown left. It’s a fucking crime the way he left this defense! All in all we have a terrific HC in Hafley and a much improved offense. We all know that Hafley will build a top 5 defense by year 3. The program is on the way up, mission accomplished for year 1!

Daz couldn't recruit. They sucked on defense tonight because Daz's players suck. Hafley needs to close the sale on blue chip defensive recruits. Simple as that.

I like Grosel, but he cost us the game. The red zone picks were bad throws. He missed or under threw a lot of passes. UVA's secondary was terrible and Jurk would have thrown for 600 against them.

I hope today puts to rest the notion that Grosel is anything other than an adequate back up or that he is anything close to being in the same league as Jurk. If Jurk had been available we’d have won.

Most notable to me this year was:
1. Offensive line either was really overrated coming in or the coaching was abysmal. The lack of any progress with that much "experience" and the complete inability to muster a running game has to be perhaps the greatest failure this year.
2. The expectations for the defense were that they would be bad along the front and in the secondary, particularly. They managed even to exceed those expectations as the defense was horrible across the board. Amazing inability to tackle that remained a constant throughout the season. Embarrassing level of talent particularly in the secondary where there were a couple of players who have no business playing FBS football.
3. Maybe veiled a bit by having a reliable kicker, special teams continued to show that it either simply has no emphasis or no competent coaching. See inability to tackle above....
4. And maybe symptomatic of troubling coaching faults going forward, the penalties! Stupid, mindless, undisciplined penalties, so often at key moments in games.

Hafley has a ton of work to do. I like the QB and receiving corps going forward. But there is reconstruction just about everywhere else.

Jurk would not have thrown for 600 because we would have been winning and running the ball for most of the fourth, so dispel that notions right away.

This was a dumb game against a dumb team that we should have won. UVA somehow manages to have a dirty football program despite being a school for rich, white kids from Fairfield and Fairfax Counties. I’m more upset that we lost to Armstrong who looks like the kids I went to high school with from Woodlawn who tried to act like they were from the hood.

Fuck UVA. Fuck that game. Pretty cool that Denny Dimes threw for 520 though. Good for him.

My 30 second synopsis of the season is that the defense did not improve despite an increase in talent, and the offense was roughly equally as effective despite what seemed like a very good o-line (on paper) and talent upgrades at every skill position but RB. Hafley's personality is more endearing than the end years of Slaughter's tough guy act were, and it was refreshing not to run the goal line offense as a base package. That said, the team never figured out how to run the ball despite being largely built to do so, the defense could never stop anyone unless it was getting turnovers, and issues with procedural and unsportsmanlike (aka dumb) penalties popped up again and again. Hafley's enjoying his "new coach recruiting bump" for now, and I'm skeptical the level of recruiting has actually changed, but we'll see. Finally, the decision not to use Grosel after Jurk separated his shoulder should be under major scrutiny after Grosel's record-tying performance, though it won't be.

Open-minded but not convinced on Hafley. Leaning towards "he's not the one." Piecing together a functional defense will be the test for year 2.

I'm sure Jurk's extra 4 inches of height over Grosel would have inspired the defense to stop falling down and missing tackles.

During Grosel’s “record setting performance”, he had a QBR that is 5 points below Jurk’s avg—15 points behind Jurk’s better performances and on par with Jurk’s two worst games one of which was played with a dislocated shoulder. His “record setting performance” was entirely a product of UVA understanding that a soft cushion would prevent any chance of big chunk plays because of Grosel’s complete lack of arm strength and that a Grosel-lead offense would self destruct if forced to sustain multi-play drives, which, of course it did.

Our O-line is abysmal. The one aspect of the team that underperformed expectations, and given the fact that it was actually supposed to be a strength made it horrifying failure. We are going to need to make a change there from a coaching perspective—it looks like a technique/scheme issue as opposed to a talent issue and will only be fixed by better coaching/teaching as opposed to upgrading talent (which realistically, is only going to happen marginally).

As for the defense, it is horrible but that is 100% a lack of talent. If we are honest, I think this D turned out much better than we had reason to expect and that is entirely the product of coaching up what we had and plugging in a couple of upgrade transfers that we only got because of the respect for Hafley in the industry. We will get better as we upgrade talent. There is no reason to worry about it in the long term.

In the end, 6-5 seems disappointing, but it was 6-5 without the normal three cupcakes designed to generate 7 wins despite a sub-500 ACC record. There were no WTF losses and honestly, VA Tech was the only mildly head scratching performance—UVA would have been a head scratcher if we hadn’t been starting a low-MAC level talent at QB because of Dazoo’s horrific recruiting.

in an era of free transfers esp at the qb position, grosel is a good backup. able to step in and not crater the offense but won't bolt or bitch once he doesn't get the starting job.

I’m largely here.

However, the D and the OLine run blocking yesterday were the worst of the year. I don’t think Jurk turns that game into a win... or would Matty Ice, Foley, BSP, any Hass, Rettig, Towles, Tyler Murphy or PaulPete. The D got 3 stops in the first 10 series. It let up nearly 600 yards to a team who spent about 20 mins of game time focused primarily on running the clock while nursing their 3TD lead. That game was not winnable yesterday so long as we had to give UVA’s offense the ball back after a score. Pretending otherwise sweeps that joke of a defensive effort under the rug. It is a talent issue. Fine. And there were injuries... but those were limited to the secondary. Our DL and LB group were healthy and shitty.

And let’s not sweep the complete lack of a run game under the rug. Teddy spent 10 games telling this board that Bailey wasn’t good and that we should be exclusive with modern backs like Levy and Garwo. We’ve been fed similar nonsense from Hafley about how the OL is gelling and the run game is better every week. How these guys just needed more time playing together due to the lack of spring ball. Well... Garwo and Levy shit the bed yesterday and the OL from a run-blocking perspective could not have been worse. On a team rattled with injuries, that OL has been consistently healthy, experienced and fucking terrible. Hafley starts getting the jorts treatment if that shitty Yukon player isn’t replaced this offseason.
:toby

Grosel’s performance was good enough to win if the rest of the team showed up. He was helped mightily by the receivers, decent pass protection and a terrible UVA secondary. His first INT was beyond dumb and was benchable. I give him credit for staying strong in the pocket and giving his players chances to make a play on the ball. It was as good of a performance anyone could expect from the known quantity. But, once that game was over midway through the 3rd, we should’ve moved on to see if the third stringers had anything to offer the program.

I didn't say Bailey wasn't good. I said he should not be starting in this offense. If you want to go back to the Daz offense or install an offense like Tennessee, he is clearly the best back on the team. For the West Coast zone read offense they appear to want to implement, Garwo should be the starter but isn't because Levy is the only one that can pass block at a high level, which showed up again yesterday on several occasions.

I still maintain the LB room is the worst part of the defense. DL room occasionally shows promise (Bequette, shitta, Horsley, Maximillian, chibuezze, Rayam on short yard situations) and the secondary (when healthy*) is good enough for us to beat all but the 2-3 elite teams in the ACC (counting the children of the corn in that group). The LBs are consistently bad. They take terrible angles and miss so many tackles that it’s impossible for the defense to ever be good at stopping the run. And if you can’t stop the run, you can’t win most games.

* lack of depth has killed this group... when Deon Jones went down, it was a clusterfuck at safety with the backups until they decided to move guys around to compensate.

Yea... When discussing all the issues with the defense, the LBs have gotten off lightly in my opinion. They look like they are playing in cement shoes out there which leads to the bad angles they take - they must think they are faster than they really are. And when they manage to get into position to make a tackle, they usually whiff anyway. I don't know how they are getting credited with all these tackles.

ohhhhh, so he has a vagina. now so many more things make sense. how brave and powerful for dennis to play among all those brute men. he truly is a golden god(dess)

No illusions about what Grosel is, but without his surprising output BC would have suffered the worst bludgeoning of the season against VIRGINIA!! So say what you will.

Here is what needs to be said, the 2020 team was filled with mediocre football players. When you have just mediocre players and you play an ACC schedule, you might beat every shitty team on your schedule (if you are lucky.) You might not. This team did not.

There were no WTF losses this year in Hafley's rookie season. You know why? Because in order to have a WTF loss, you have to lose to a mathematically inferior team when your own team has a roster of players who are at least better than the average player in the conference. We haven't had that kind of a roster, those kind of athletes, and that kind of seasonal circumstance since

:toby

who coincidentally could beat Notre Dame.

We really have no idea how good or bad Hafley's first recruiting class is. We wont know (for sure) for a couple of years. But I have hope for the first time that sometime (in the near future) it would once again be mathematically possible for this team to truly suffer a WTF loss.
