Seniors going to return next year?

Postby DrJackRyan on Thu Dec 03, 2020 2:23 pm

Herald today implies at least some of the Seniors/Grad students could be back next year. I somehow forgot that players were given a full extra year of eligibility.

Players who opted to compete this season will be granted an additional year of eligibility by the NCAA, which extended a blanket waiver to all fall sport athletes on Aug. 21. That would benefit the Eagles’ graduate transfers on defense, tackles Chibueze Onwuka (Buffalo) and Luc Bequette (California), and safety Deon Jones (Maryland).

There is still an 85 scholarship cap so some kids are done or transferring.

Through this year there has been a cap of 85 scholarship players and 35 walk-ons per program.

In August, the NCAA decided that players who were on a roster this year will not lose a year of eligibility regardless of whether they competed or opted out. NCAA also determined also that programs would be allowed to exceed the 85 scholarship limit to accomodate this. There are rumors that they may decrease the 35 number a bit to soften the financial burden on schools but that has not yet been decided.

Hafley wants a full program; he's argued in the past there our program does not have enough bodies in it and he wants to work toward growing its size. so, this makes me wonder if he will welcome most back. he said in a recent press conference "those discussions will be had after the season". this will definitely be interesting thing to watch.

Per SI, the scholarship and roster list will be expanded next year...

https://www.si.com/college/2020/08/20/ncaa-extra-year-eligibility-difficulties-inflated-rosters

So, all athletes playing football, soccer, volleyball and cross country have a fifth and, in some cases, a sixth year of eligibility. The seniors on those squads will not count against those teams’ roster limits. For instance, if 20 scholarship-earning seniors on a football team decided to return for the 2021 season, that program’s roster could conceivable, barring attrition, be at 105 players.

Lump in the 35 walk-ons FBS programs are allowed and rosters in some places could soar well above 140, if the NCAA doesn’t decrease the walk-on allotment.
