Expected him to stay a couple of more years and parlay it into a big time job. I think this move has the distinct potential to slow that resume growth.

Nope. You just want someone to say BC should hire someone that will stay a while instead of an up and comer that will leave so that you can argue with them. (As a side note, you also to attribute some Jersey Strong provincialism to Boston-based posters so that you can use Marty's departure as ipso facto proof that LA is better than Boston). Think quite the opposite is true to be honest. Visitors will go to dirty places like Hollywood Blvd. and Santa Monica Pier and get the wrong impression. This is some serious country stupid. Marty left BC better than he found it, and demonstrated to both BC and future candidates that an ambitious, energetic candidate with great personal awareness can succeed and lever the job into greater things.

Approaching the next hire from a place of turtling up into standard butthurt Bostonian provincialism is the worst thing the school could do at this point. There's nothing worse than a province that thinks its not in the provinces.

Anyway, Baltimore is unapologetic and perhaps even proud of its inward-lookingness and historic role as an backwater that is incomprehensible to outsiders. No one ever said of Baltimore that its the hub from which the spokes emerge, and more importantly, no one's ever believed it; someone famous did say the city's a beautiful woman in a dirty dress, and everyone believes it.

Boston is fine for what it is and doesn't need to be anything else - a lot of Bostonians don't see that for some reason, and insist it must be more.

I visited Baltimore a couple of years ago and my host showed the pier region (I don't remember the name) and told me, quite proudly and with no hint of irony, that the area had really improved and there was a good 4 or 5 block area where you could now walk safely

I don't reallly care much if Boston is or isn't something to the rest of the world. I'm a transplant, and it works for me. LA traffic still sucks. I don't have anything bad to say about Baltimore, Camden Yards is nice and BWI is more convenient than Reagan.

Anyone who expected otherwise is an idiot. He came into a shit situation, made it better, and represented alma mater with energy and integrity. That he left for a professional opportunity he determined to be better is not a character flaw, or even the beginnings of a reason to speak ill of him.

Just think his tenure was highly overrated. raised a lot of money and landed Hafley (his biggest accomplishment as it stands now). that's pretty much it. like I said on BC twitter, I give him a B- (unless the rumors about him firing Alison Foley are true... in that case, he gets a C+).

p.s. members of the football team claim that he did not want to fire Daz either but the BOT forced his hand after some former players threatened to them they would stop donating immediately. so before we deify Juicebar, I think we need to stop and consider maybe he wasn't the savior people are making him out to be.

I have lived in LA and Boston at different time. In fairness, Boston is a much different city then it was when I went to school at BC. In the early 90s it was a provincial backwater dump teetering precariously on the precipice of going full Baltimore—except more from the Belfast side of dystopia rather than the Mogadishu side of dystopia and without any of Baltimore’s charms. In short, it sucked ass for anything other than going to school. Since then, the city figured out how to leverage some of its few remaining advantages and has improved itself substantially—both economically and culturally—and the population far more transient then it used to be, which is to the good as you no longer feel overwhelmed by the breying of hordes of downy-looking, donkey-faced, shanty Irish swine.

LA would be very nice if it were 5 or 6 separate cities and no one had to travel between them by automobile. It also happens to be a company town for the most despicable of all industries. It edges Boston from a cultural standpoint, but no amount of good weather and cultural considerations makes up for it taking an hour and 15 minutes to get from the office downtown to fucking Santa Monica at Midnight. You are better off living in San Diego. Also, fuck San Francisco while we are at it. Accordingly, Boston edges LA, but in all honesty, I’d take a day drinking my way from Federal Hill through Inner Harbor through Little Italy and Fells Point and ending in Canton over both places. Sure, there is a good chance of dying 12 hours into a jag that ends in Canton or at the very least ending up drinking bootleg vodka in the basement of the Polish Home Club or worse, being shanghaied into going to Dundalk to drink in some horrible Billytown bar where the bar doesn’t close for the night until there is a stabbing, but there is something noble in the endeavor and more authentic than LA or the new and improved Boston.

Nag soccer, 14/22 NCAA appearances, one NCAA final appearance, winning record all time... she built the program from practically nothing. With the exception of men’s hockey, most of BC’s teams can only dream of such results. She was fired and JC still has a job.
Juicebar was average at best except when it came to raising money.

MJ was very good at picking coaches. After watching multiple AD’s fuck up hires, I’m thankful for the job he did. I’m not sold on UCLA being a better job because exactly what are their expectations? MJ could have been the AD at BC for 30 years. Obviously, he and his family did not want to be here as he was applying for jobs two years ago. MJ told me at the Beanpot that he was begging for funding to hire a nutritionist coach. He was definitely frustrated at the lack of financial support for athletics. Hopefully, Leahy gets out soon and we get a pro athletics President like Marty Meehan.
