UCLA wanting him before making a bball hire or being close to the fundraising campaign goal is wild. Maybe he did want to make a move in bball but Father and the Board got tight fisted. Wouldn't blame him.

Word is the other finalist, Reed-Francois, is the front runner. This puts Marty on the clock, one more year. Are they going to let him hire next year so he can immediately bail?

Wonder how Hafley is feeling.

I know MJ was upset with the funding for athletics. He said he could not get the money for a nutritional coach for football. His other issue was not being given full control over game day. He wanted to create a huge fan day experience where the old Flynn Plex stood complete with stage, food trucks, etc. BCPD we’re worried about underage drinking and re recreating the old Shea Field experience. Dining services was worried about losing concession sales.

BC is still and will be a steppingstone until they commit the financial resources to athletics. It’s a real black eye for Leahy to again be looking for another AD. They either need to embrace the game day experience and move the games to Gillette.

Can anyone vouch for the above? Considering how the football staff has exploded in size I'm not buying this.

UCLA is a good job and I wouldn't blame him for taking it, but the timing would be a real kick in the nuts to BC. Not ready to lose Marty yet.

Seems weird. Marty seems poised for one of the upper B1G jobs, which are much better than UCLA. PAC 12 is in a worse media situation than the ACC, UCs have constant budget issues, etc. it’s a name, sure, but his career trajectory seems like he wouldn’t have to take it in order to go back to OSU, MSU (if anyone on earth would want that job) one day.

UCLA is another Athletic Department living off some good seasons over a decade ago. It's the Miami of the West Coast.

There's also the same risk of the nut job Governor of CA cancelling the football season for them as there is at BC.

If he wants to have his family live in Pasadena (which is nice). It’s a good move. It is a higher profile gig. However, it isn’t a major step up.

It is a State school in a State that is teetering on bankruptcy. One of university systems (the one that has schools like Fresno and San Diego State) already cancelled college for next Fall. From a stability perspective, BC is a better gig. Financially, PAC12 does better than the ACC because they have the most ridiculous contract. The next go around for them will likely be difficult because their viewership is in the toilet.

From a coaching perspective, Chip Kelly hasn’t been the home run everyone thought and his contract is massive. They just gave a massive contract to Mick Cronin as well. He’d have a runway similar to BC where he’d have a good 3 years to let contracts bleed out before making a move. Fans there are more laid back than USC and are even more patient when USC is also down.

At the end of the day, this is what we signed up for... bring in people who will do a good job and then leave.

There's a rumor that BC is considering sitting out football for 2020 which spooked MJ. The rumor doesn't make a lot of sense on the surface, but it's out there. The long-term effects of missing a football season would be catastrophic for the Athletic Department so I have to imagine they'll do everyone possible to play (including having students back on campus for classes).

Can someone explain this rumor? Your post could be all that's needed to constitute a rumor. Is there anything more than that? Because, BC cancelling FB on its own accord involves it refunding ACC money due to lost TV revenue and games (each away venue is counting on BC being there). It also involves paying out of conference opponents for cancellations. They'd be better served moving the entire program to somewhere in North Carolina and do remote learning there while sharing the Carolina Panthers facility.

I can understand that there could be a concern that any crazy liberal admins in Blue States could do something nuts. But, barring them cancelling all sporting events (including Red Sox and Patriots), private schools are not subject to the same entity deciding the fate of UMass athletics. Further, that risk is significantly heightened at a State school located in an even crazier state (like UCLA).

Look... anything could happen. And, you can never put anything past Dems trying to destroy the economy to usher in socialism. But, I don't see how jumping to a California (which has already cancelled the Fall Semester of most State colleges) solve the problem... especially when UCLA's financials were already a mess.

Reed-Francois has been mentioned forever for the job but the fans are ho-hum about her. The admins have been throwing out names as alternatives and they have all sucked. Marty has received a completely different response. Folks think BC is a legit program (as opposed to UCLA) and like his time in the Big Ten. There is concern about a complete lack of West Coast connections and experience. However, from an UCLA alum/former-athlete friend of mine... there is definitely smoke here.

as usual, hjs spot on

who doesn't love pasadena, and UCLA is a bigger profile.

assuming he wants to go run a b1g school, not sure this is the right move given the fiscal problems of the state and their contracts in place in football and basketball. if he flops at ucla cant imagine a b1g school will come running.

all that said, while i dont think its the best way to get to where (i think & assume) he wants to go, i would never begrudge him for going if thats what he wants and i am a huge believer in the concept that we will be at our best when we take great people with higher aspirations and let them use us as a training ground. if he goes and we embrace this, and hire another young person just like him (same deal w hafley, who i think will be great), we will become the place the best young people want to go to prove they can hit it big.

Pasadena to UCLA every day is a nightmare drive. They'd live on the Westside. The Rose Bowl is very far from campus.

He can live in Malibu or Santa Monica (either would be awesome). I mentioned Pasadena because I figured the Athletic offices would be located near the Rose Bowl. If not... it means he'll just have to slum it at a home overlooking the ocean.

That is the most naive post I have ever read. Replacing very good coaches is extremely difficult to do. BC is far better off retaining top talent and building a top tier program. Cycling through coaches is all that has ever happened at BC that is why we are a stepping stone. One bad hire and it’s back to the bottom third of the conference.
