Instead of signing another dumb petition in a world full of them, the players and coaches would get a lot farther if they would sign a different piece of paper: a waiver of all liability against the school/conference for any covid-related liability. Not expecting them to do it, though

Is the 2020 schedule posted on the BC website complete or are they still searching for an opponent for Sep. 12th? Less then 4 weeks away.

You can argue that the best thing that happened to Fields is the cancellation. Forget the potential health issues... he simply hasn’t played long enough for people to point out holes in his game (which remains raw). He will crush the combine and will be guaranteed to be at least the #2 overall selection.

Ultimately, these unwanted crusaders removing decisions from people (because their social media accounts know better) have no clue as to the real impact of their actions. What if last season was cancelled? How would that economically impact that players in the top of the draft? The first overall selection was pegged as 3rd Rounder before the season. College football (unlike every other college sport) is incredibly important for prospects to showcase their ability. So... when you remove that avenue, you remove something these kids have spent their lives working towards. Since colleges have allowed anyone to opt out for any reason, it is incredibly paternalistic to force all to opt out.

If Fields and these parents were smart, they’d point out that a bunch of white men removed an opportunity from a bunch of minorities all because the white men didn’t believe the minorities had the ability to make an intelligent decision.

Agreed.

But I think the time to do that was a week ago BEFORE the B1G-T(14)N decided to postpose/suspend the season. I think its too late now, they are not likely to go back and undo what they did. Because the decision has been made (and they will stick to it) your "piece of paper" would wind up being nothing more than another "dumb petition."

Here in the West, some of the coaches are trying to come up with a spring season that is entirely "internal" to the Pac-12. Herman Edwards had the idea of the Pac-12 South playing only other Pac-12 South opponents (so a five game season) and in the North, they do the same 5 game season. Then the winners just play each other for the Pac-12 championship. That way it wouldn't put too much physical pressure on the players who intend on playing again in the fall of 2021. Everyone here has pretty much accepted the fact that college sports are gonzo until Jan 1st at the earliest, but that doesn't stop them from constantly complaining about it.

Lawsuits based on COVID by athletes are not going anywhere. Even if states don't have assumption of the risk.

Multifaceted discussion of the hurdles to athletes suing schools successfully. Leave it to Addazio to lower those barriers.

Comparative negligence is certainly a problem. The fact that the school is probably not negligent in the first place is probably a bigger problem.

Asking the attorneys here: does it matter if you SHOULD know that certain schools are likely to lie (e.g. FSU)?

Its going to depend on the situation. I would guess for the most part the schools are protected from liability under an assumption of risk and there is no more liability than any other student. The potential for liability would arise if the school wasnt following the protocols that they laid out and that failure led the the player contracting covid. ie They tell the students the weight equipment is sanitized after every player and it was and they could prove the player contracted covid after using a bench that another infected player just used. Its tough, but there are scumbag plaintiff attorneys that are itching for the chance.

If they just do what they say they are doing, they should be fine. Like anything else the issue is usually with having a policy and not following it. You are better off not having a policy. (spoken like a compliance officer lol)

UNC Chapel Hill cancels in-person classes. Is there any Dem governors allowing in person classes?

they had planned in person classes and then saw a spike of 175+ cases during the first week of classes.

their brethren in rolly are still planning in-person learning and have much fewer restrictions and distancing than the classier school in chapel hill (so to answer your question, yes there are dem governors allowing in-person classes). on paper, the restriction may be the same but in person the practice is much more lax at rcc. so it's interesting the poor heelz are getting the spikes and rcc isn't.

i don't think this is a political issue for the state of nc, but you moj this all you like, mo

that was why i asked the question. the nc state schools are planning to hold live classes. unc ch just reversed that decision because of 175+ cases of covid attributed to the first week of school, but the decision to hold live classes remains in place for the other state schools. so while some are trying to get political on a football board, i was pointing out that the politics might not be accurate as asserted in this case.

and, for the record, i am pretty well known around here to not even like sports... and the same should be said for the politicalization of covid 19 as it relates to college kids or the sports they play

Yes.

The more important question that impacts all our hopes re: ACC football: how can a school that cannot conduct in-person classes justify fielding a football team?
